Excited new owner (almost!)
Re: Excited new owner (almost!)
Hi everyone & thanks for your comments.
I would like to get something that looks pretty close to stock if possible. I'm in the process of selling my (three weeks) old Pioneer AVIC-F930BT headunit because I don't think it would have looked quite right. Must admit, I'm slightly regretting that decision but I'm committed now.
I did some rough calculations as follows (using current pricing on eBay):
Option 1 - 2004 model (gen 2) RNS-E:
- Reconditioned Headunit £500
- RNS-E Bluetooth module £250
- Alpine iPod interface £100
- Wiring adaptor £30
Option 2 - 2010 model (gen 3) RNS-E:
- Reconditioned Headunit £600
- RNS-E Bluetooth module £250
- AMI module £300
- Wiring adaptor £30
- Audi A6 fascia ???
Option 1 comes to £850, option 2 at least £1180. I'd prefer the newer RNS-E so I can get up to date mapping for it but £1200 is a lot of money - assuming I can find a fascia from somewhere. The older RNS-E is still pricey and that's for a slower unit, smaller SD card support, older map graphics, lower resolution screen and a non standard UI for the iPod. Sooo.... not really ideal.
I've sent an email asking for some more info anyway so will wait and see if I get any response and an idea of pricing.
On a slightly different note - has anyone managed to replace their interior trim with carbon fiber? Sadly the new RS6 has dodgy wood fitted which will have to go. I found a link to a bloke in Canada that wraps proper carbon fiber around the original trim pieces but that works out to around £450. I've obtained some samples of 3M DI-NOC which is a textured carbon fiber effect vinyl and it does look pretty good. So I'm thinking of applying that with a bit of lacquer so it looks like the original carbon trim. Unless anyone has carbon trim and would much prefer wood? No, didn't think so...
The question is - am I in danger of turning this beautiful car into a ricer mobile with a tat stereo and max power interior styling?

Re: Excited new owner (almost!)
Regarding the Wood trim I have the same problem
do not know what this guy is like and how good a job he does (maybe other forum members could help on this one) but noticed on his signature he does piano black and carbon fibre trimming services, his forum name is "Virdee Autos" a link here to him http://forum.rs246.com/memberlist.php?m ... ile&u=3707
If you read this post and look at his signature you will see the services he offers http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=89974

Re: Excited new owner (almost!)
Interesting... would be useful to know if anyone has any experience with Virdy Autos. To be honest though I'm thinking of having a bash at this myself - removing the trim is apparently pretty straightforward as is applying the carbon fiber wrap. I did a quick search and came up with this (apologies for it being a BMW)... now that does look nice in matte finish: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=524379
It would be cheap to do as well. I'm guessing this would be enough.. £50 and a couple of hours work. http://www.carbonmods.co.uk/Products/DI ... C1000.aspx

Welcome busta.
Do yourself a favour and dont keep a track of how much you spend on the 6. It could ruin your experiance depending on how deep your pockets are. Just use it regularly and have fun every time you take it out

Re: Excited new owner (almost!)
FON.
£600 for a Gen III 2010 RNS-E, where do I sign up? The last time I looked into these it was Euro 1699 (with a C5 flaceplate). BTW the faceplate was 199€.
The reason they were so pricey was there were no 2nd-handers available. These units were from people releasing money from their new cars and replacing with aftermarket ICE.
If you can actually get a proper Gen III, then I'd do it, problem is, I don't trust that price. There are 2010 models that aren't the full monty, screen is still lower res etc but may have larger card capacity. All RNS-E units will still take up-to-date nav discs (ASFAIK), so you need to ask yourself what else do you want it for.

I've got an RNS-D for music with iPhone integration and a tomtom for nav. I've never felt the need for anything else.
For iPhone hands free:

Seriously, 1100 euros? Wow. The ones I saw were on eBay so I suspect there are a few duff units floating around on there. I'd love it if Pioneer made a version of the AVIC touchscreen unit to fit Audi like they do for some other marques. The proper Audi route looks expensive even next to the high end after market units (the top of the range Pioneer is about £1000) and offer only a fraction of the features. I know it's the proper thing to do and once it's in I'll be happy and forget about the cost and all that but having just stretched myself to buy the car that route is out of the question for a while yet.
So it's RNS-D for now I guess. Plus a bit of carbon fiber to cover the nasty wood. Picking the car up on Tuesday now so will post some piccies if I get time before heading off to Glasto on Wednesday - yay!
Re: Excited new owner (almost!)
€1100? I said €1699.
See how you feel about the RNS-D then I'd say the Kenwood for its value.

Re: Excited new owner (almost!)
Why are the A6 RNS-E so expensive and the A3 ones not? Are they less good?

Re: Excited new owner (almost!)
A6 ones are like rocking horse $hit, A3 and A4 common as muck also i think the B4 RS4 boys have to use the A6 rnse. I've got an A4 2008 rnse here just waiting for a A6 faceplate to turn up at the right price.Shoppinit wrote:Why are the A6 RNS-E so expensive and the A3 ones not? Are they less good?
Avus Avant, RNS-E mk2 with sds and Bluetooth, Milltek, Hotchkis, Bilstein, Forge, ITG, A.C.E, Wagner, FBMFSW, MTM.
Re: Excited new owner (almost!)
The C5 ones will be getting a bit long in the tooth, I would have thought. Surely one of the pioneer avic things with the canbus integration for MFSW would be a better value option for someone wanting more features.

Are the A6 faceplates available to buy anywhere or are you guys just waiting for stuff to pitch up on eBay from time to time?
