Excited new owner (almost!)

Post by retmana » Thu Jun 16, 2011 3:06 pm

Hello all,

I've just paid a deposit on a black RS6 and pending funds all clearing will be collecting either at the weekend or early next week! Getting very excited at the prospect. I did lots of searching prior to buying and came across this forum - so I've learned lots already about the car.

The provenance looks good - I don't know if its know on here on not but the history is all complete, DRC has been binned for Bilsteins, Gearbox completely overhauled a few weeks ago with a years warranty, oil + filter service a couple of months ago and cambelt done fairly recently. Oh, and new brakes / tyres so hopefully there won't be too many expensive surprises in the near future.

I'll post some pics when the sale has all been completed and then start with the onslaught of inevitable noob questions...

Cheers,

Andrew.

It's a saloon in Black. Still waiting for the fecking bank to clear a cheque so I can pay and collect the car. Getting quite cross having to wait 5 days for Intelligent Finance to make the funds available. Muppets.

Meanwhile, I've been investigating RNS-D replacement options. I've seen lots of info on RNS-E (old and new versions) and whilst it looks very cool it's an expensive option. Does anyone have any experience at all of the cheap aftermarket headunits? There's one on eBay at the moment: (someone please shout if I'm not allowed to post links)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/7-HD-Car-DVD-Play ... 022wt_1141

It doesn't look very OEM but isn't total pants. I'm thinking it would be much cheaper for iPod + Bluetooth + GPS + SD card for around £400 vs £1000 for the Audi equivalent.

Thoughts anyone? Oh and piccies will follow once I get the car. Hopefully on Monday, maybe Tuesday depending on banks.

Been doing some more digging and found lots of chinese suppliers/resellers for similar units. I would hope for something that looks reasonably OEM - unfortunately the info on these is pretty scarce but this doesn't that bad. At least they've attempted to copy the Audi UI style:
http://www.szenco.com/page-8-19.html

Search for "Enco A601" and you'll see more pictures.

Edit: found some more pictures here (this is the A3 version and has dodgy lettering on the front but shows some screenshots): http://www.diytrade.com/china/4/product ... normal_img

Been searching all afternoon for these - lots of different chinese suppliers but this one looks about the closest to a proper RNS-E unit but has loads of features. I have a feeling I might end up as guinea pig for trying one of these unless anyone already has one?
http://autoradiohk.com/Show_P.asp?Id=1521

I also found a few video clips of these on YouTube
This one is short/grainy but shows the unit at night. Looks like it fits in nicely with the original dash lighting. I don't think it's an RNS-E as the lights are in the wrong place (no row of buttons beneath and what looks like a CD slot above):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnF5IJu0woM

This one is for the C6 with separate screen and controls but does look very slick:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMeH9YJjmtE

This I think is for the A4 - again it looks quite like the OEM user interface but I've checked their site and can't find an A6 version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBfhlBBVswU

A totally off the wall suggestion - some guy has created his own car PC and developed a custom front end that looks just like the Audi one. Not sure I could be arsed to go to that much trouble though...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAnwocjQXrQ

Right. I'd better stop with all these links now before someone shouts at me. Does anyone have one of these fitted? If not I think I'll see if I can find a UK supplier for the autoradiohk.com one. I know it will be cheap chinese sh1t but if it looks fairly close to the Audi system and works reasonably I think I'd be tempted. I had a really nice Pioneer touch screen unit in my last car but it just wouldn't look right in the RS6.

Can you take SATNAV directions in Cantonese?

No, my cantonese is a bit rusty! I think the navigation part runs on a separate Windows CE board on most of these cheapo chinese units so they can run pretty much any navigation software. Maybe even something in English. Some of the adverts on ebay say that nav s/w is not included but they'll say where to get it from (doesn't sound at all dodgy!).

I just know these are going to end up being total plop but I can't quite shake the notion yet. Haven't managed to find a seller for the A6 version - seems it was only launched in April so I'll have to contact the manufacturer directly and see if I can get one shipped over. I'm intrigued because it says things like "supports small screen display" - presumably the DIS, which would be nice if it were true!

Here it is in the "Auto Radio Hong Kong" news section (great domain name!): http://www.autoradiohk.com/newsView.asp?id=1336

What's your budget? Are recon'd RNS-Es from Poland really that expensive these days? You know what they say "Pay half the price, buy twice".
I know Kenwood do a good jobbie that slots right in like a finger in a bum, it's touch screen too (just don't use the same finger) - sadly no DIS but that can't be the end of the world.
No matter where you go, there you are.

honestly

i have a 2011 S4, with HDD MMI Tech Pack High (3d Mapping, 10GB Jukebox, DVD player, Bluetooth, Speech Recognition Input etc etc)

I step into my B7 RS 4 with RNSE (same as RS 6) and, ok, its not as slick, but FUNCTIONALLY, it performs 100% as effective as the 2011 S4 unit

so, go RNSE all the way

worth the money

I had the RNS-E fitted a few weeks back and having had the car four years wish I had done that mod first.

Hope you enjoy the car when it arrives!

Screw the rns-e, i've got a kenwood 7240 and it's superb. Easy to use, touchscreen (pooie fingers do struggle to work) and has all features needed. You can get the pretty cheap off ebay or you could get a current model thats around the same price as the rnse.
Just cause it doesn't look standard doesn't mean it's wrong!!!!! :biggrin2:
