In town I usually use only 1st, 3rd and 6th gears.pisquano wrote:as I said it's rare for me to go beyond 3rd gear he he

Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

3rd gear is a wonderful gear for A/B roads going from 50-90mph either when overtaking or just a nice series of flowing bends.PetrolDave wrote:In town I usually use only 1st, 3rd and 6th gears.pisquano wrote:as I said it's rare for me to go beyond 3rd gear he he

OK just back from a quick typical ride in london.
traffic then a few runs: average mpg measured 12.5...
I am now at 3/4 of the tank still to go having done only 41 miles - strangely the computer says I can still do 160 miles which would be an acceptable total of 200.... how can it say that?

Re: How many miles/tank city drivers?
I have fairly boring routine habits which equate to me doing 1 of 3 things most days.
1) I set off from Twickenham area to my preferred place of work in Acton 4 miles away, the journey takes around 15 mins and I set off at around 7 ~ 7:15 ish in a bid to get a parking space where I work. Traffic appears quite heave most mornings but moves surprisingly quickly. I routinely get 13 ~ 18 to the gallon on this trip.
2) I am forced to go to our other depot in Stratford west london, I travel around the A406 to get there, it is 33 miles and takes roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 15 mins, I set off around 6 AM, again parking is an issue. Traffic is light for most of my journey apart from the roadworks where the A406 does a sharp bend (roughly arnos grove area) I peak at 24~25 MPG on this journey but arrive showing 21~22 after putting my foot down through tunnels with the window down and the "S" button pressed
, also moving from the A406 to the A12 via redbridge roundabout is always a good excuse for hitting the rev limiter.
3) I am forced to go to our Stratford depot in west london, I travel through the city to get there, it is roughly 17 miles and takes roughly 1 hour, I set off around 9PM, traffic is light I arrive showing 18~20 MPG after peaking at 24 MPG on the westway, the peak is eroded by the slow moving traffic by angel. there is not much opportunity to play on this route, but it costs less as it's nearly half the miles of the 406 route but comparable MPG.
I have also seen 7 MPG whilst idling in traffic, I exclusively use tesco momentum, I tried bp ultimate once and im convinced I got worse MPG, but I did not refill with ultimate enough times to get conclusive proof.

Re: How many miles/tank city drivers?
is the computer measurement using a different sender or system altogether to the one used by the fuel gauge to indicate the level?
I am wondering how my car says I still have 160 miles when I have only done 40 using 1/4th of the tank so far

Re: How many miles/tank city drivers?
Im not certain but I think Yes it is, the sender is a simple mechanical float device in the petrol tank that drives the fuel gauge. the computer derives what you have used and how much you have left by measuring the amount of fuel your injectors have squirted, the remaining miles is an estimation based on current driving practices.pisquano wrote:is the computer measurement using a different sender or system altogether to the one used by the fuel gauge to indicate the level?

I am not sure how the computer knows how much fuel you have to start with though, I guess it must take that from the mechanical sender in the tank.
Re: How many miles/tank city drivers?
keep checking and my average driving in town is 10.5/11mpg which means a frightening 150/tank
I still ask myself how it is that the expected mileage seems to be exceeding what I see in the fuel gauge measurement - anyone has any idea?
computer still tells me I am supposed to get to 200 miles total, but the needle is almost on the 1st mark right of the center and done only 45 miles

Re: How many miles/tank city drivers?
I thought the range is calculated based on your last few miles' mpg? When I hit a clear stretch of road, my range will sometimes increase slightly even though I have just driven an extra 5-10 miles. You'll have to run the tank down to zero to see how accurate the prediction was.

Several people I know who have managed to drive 20+ miles after the predicted range reaches zero.Steve_C wrote:You'll have to run the tank down to zero to see how accurate the prediction was.

Re: How many miles/tank city drivers?
Id like to try and see but don't want to risk remaining stuck.
Is it legal to have a tank with a few litres in the car, just in case?
Alternatively I'd like to understand how far from 0 miles to go were the readings people are reporting in this thread.

Re: How many miles/tank city drivers?
Already answered above.
Went at least 15 miles over zero, probably more like 20 miles. Wussed out and fueled at Tesco (99 Momentum) rather than the usual diet of Shell V Power. Pump clicked at 63 which I thought was a bit early. Tried putting some more in but it came back out.
