RS246 v5 - Site Style/Theme

Post by PhilT » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:45 pm

As some of you are unsure about this theme, I thought you might want to flick through these and suggest ones that you like and why - http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/?style_id=59 (Click "Previous" and "Next" in the top right to change themes).

Please post feedback in this format:

- http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/?style_id=875 - Like the narrower forum and user details are back on the left.
- http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/?style_id=23 - Icons are clear and easier to understand.

Cheers Phil, will have a look through.

I must admit, I am unsure on the new theme, it does seem to have lost a certain look and feel, but maye that is just me.

I like it, I think having the posters details on the right rather than the left is throwing some people, you'll get used to it soon enough.

True and this style works well on my Android, so I'm hoping it is the same on other mobile devices. I see there are few people using iPhones to visit the site.

For those that don't like this theme, what do you think to this one? http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/?style_id=20

I really love the the details on the right, and a much better use of the real estate, and as mentioned, layout works great on the phone

I am feeling the love a lot for that theme :D ...as good as many i have seen, there are so many.

Every other forum in the history of the internet has the poster information on the left hand side, why does this forum now have to be different?

We read from left to right, so it's more logical to read the poster's name first, then what they have to say.

To me personally, I think it is a refreshing change.. but mayber I am odd

Exactly as you say, we read right to left, so to me its more logical to have it this way..... as personally I wish to read the information posted first, then refer to who its by on the right. Much like every letter and email in history starts with the information the writer wishes to say and then signs it with their signature block at the bottom... why don't we have signature blocks at the start/ tops of letters but forums do start with posters information etc.. food for thought I guess. and another ond of those unsolved mysteries, such as why is Marmite so Fcuking Horrid and which sick minded persion invented it  and why is an Orange called an Orange and a Bananna not called a Yellow, where does a womans lady lumps go when she lies down

Hi Phil,

This theme works well, is doesn’t look as blocky as the other themes do & looks more ergonomic.

One thing you might want to consider adding in at some point when your new version of phpBB when it’s settled is Tapatalk - Tapatalk is a forum app on the iPhone, Android, webOS, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry and Nokia.
I run Tapatalk on my forum & it’s members love it, I also use it on my Android device (HTC Desire HD) to administer my forum. Have a look at http://www.tapatalk.com/

CheeRS,
Rob

I think all three alternatives linked above are better than the current theme as the contrast is greater so easier for the eye to read.
Don't mind on the format as I'll get used to whatever it is after a few days.
If it works better on mobile phones this would be a bonus.

PS - many thanks for all the hours you must've put into this recently, Phil.

My thoughts:

1) I think the contrast is the major issue. I'm not averse to the change, like has been mentioned before it's just a question of readjusting to the new template...it'll take time that's all
2) I'd say the stickies again need to be contrasted/highlighted differently from the other posts
3) I thought/think the quick reply box was very convenient and should be retained if possible
4) I quite like the old colour scheme
5) I liked how it was possible to navigate straight to the classifieds one-click and again think that should be retained (I appreciate there's the dropdown menu but I never use it)

Thanks for the effort so far with this.

Appreciate the support, it ain't easy doing this with so many opinions and criticts :)

I've popped a new style in with better contrast. There's still some work to be done.

The above bullets should be done except the classifieds. In the meantime, bookmark this http://forum.rs246.com/viewforum.php?f=8
