how do thieves operate?
how do thieves operate?
is it true that majority of cars are stolen with keys and the immobilizer is quite tough otherwise to defeat?
RE: how do thieves operate?
Thieves don't smash windows and hot wire cars these days (unless it's an old car)
Cars are taken by stealing keys whether that's a burglary or car jacking.
Usually stolen to order as they've seen your car and followed you home or seen it in the drive.

..and what ever you do, dont take your key upstairs with you when you go to sleep, for obvious reasons.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar
my point is that because of immobilisers being so good I have two considerations
(1) what's the point of having a tracker? it seems like the only thing they can prevent is the car being loaded away
(2) this has made even less safe having a high value car, as thieves are more likely than in the past to assault you or break into your home (I guess this is particularly true for people living in isolated homes, with their shiny car in the driveway, a bit less so for people living in trafficed roads in center of town)

Its a bit off topic, but had my car broken into the other day (not the RS), must have disturbed them as they left the dvd head unit in there, although they did try hard to remove it.
I was parked up in one of those retail units, taking my 3 year old to the pet shop. Saw a couple of people about 100yards away, thought I would shout them to see if they had seen anything.....as soon as i spoke to them i knew it was them. Both looked like poster ads for crack heads. They had no business being in the middle of a retail park and the guy was very defensive and almost was trying to sqaure up to me, to intimidate me.
He came out with several different versions of what he saw and heard, I was even more suspicous. Called the police and told them what had happened, and about those two freaks. Was told I could not accuse innocent people and assume they were junkies.
Funnily enough when the police came round my house the next day, they had arrested those two, think they were repeat offenders.

Speaking from experience, they break into your house in the middle of the night, threaten you and your wife, steal your keys and anything else thats on offer. then drive off with both cars. It doesnt even matter if your on the phone to the police at the time, the police will tell you to give them what they want. You will then be questioned at length by a loss adjuster, and a private detective. They will do everything they can to pay you as little as possible.
THREE MAJOR BITS OF ADVICE !
1. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A GARAGE, PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BUY A SPORTS CAR. THESE GUYS WALK THE STREETS AT NIGHT TICKING CARS OFF THE LIST.
2. ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH TO YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY. IF THEY FIND A HOLE, THEY WILL CHUCK YOU IN IT.
3. TAKE GAP INSURANCE IF ITS ON FINANCE.
Sorry to be blunt guys and girls, i have been there. Protect yourself and your family.

where I live there are plenty of cars on the streets that are as or more expensive and "shiny" than an RS4 - I talk about Mercedes, Lambos, Astons, R8s etc etc. that's just the reality of central London

I promise you pisquano, this is happening all over the place. The guy who runs our local car spares shop was woken up at 4am with a gun pointed at his head.
It had been garaged every night apart from 2 nights that week.
If its not on show, nobody knows its there.
Fair enough, if its parked outside a block of apartments. A car thief would not know which one to break into.

Had mine for 5 months now and have never left it on the drive for longer than 5 minutes. ALWAYS in the garage.
Even when I wash it on the drive, I park the Mrs' car side on on the pavement so it would be very difficult for anyone driving past to see what it is. Maybe Im extra cautious as I live on a main road but with a wife and baby inside Im taking no risks.
