Those with 275/30 please mention if you have added spacers and what size. Ta.

We also dont know if any of those affected had tip-top suspension or more tired with some lower arms and-or bearing play as suggested above iirc by grizz/doug.

I don't think the type of suspension, or the state of it should make any difference. The geometry between "Ol Knobbly" and the centre of the wheel is fixed. Admittedly wheel bearing play would in theory make a difference, but there would need to be a lot of play (ie a completely knackered bearing) for it to move that much.

Looks to me more likely is a tyre pressure issue on the Vred's - I keep mine at 38 and they have been fine - but lower pressure and vigourous cornering would cause intermittent fouling which would wear it away gradually without being that obvious.

I agree with everything that Dave said. Sounds like those on vreds need to be especially careful to keep their pressures correct.

A buckled wheel could cause the tyre to rub only in a 6" area.

Never really checked mine, but i know it's running bridgestones and the clearance isn't huge, when i get the wheels refurb'd i'm sure i'll have good look at the tyres then.

The weird thing is that you did not smell rubber burning after driving the car, as I would have thought it would stink to high heaven.

Not only that, but low pressure would deform the tyre when it is in contact with the road, not sure why the tyre would deform at the top. Unless the centrifugal force deforms the tyre upwards?

How long did it take between fitting the tyre and having it blow up?

Low pressure reduces the overall lateral stiffness of the tyre, so the whole tyre deflects sideways under lateral load - ie when cornering.

I have only had one tyre rub on old knobbly - a Dunlop, but as I can't recall the details I haven't put it in above. I got it as the it was the only tyre a local tyre agent (in deepenst South Wlaes) had when I cut the wall on a PS2 on a rough track. It was immediately obvious when fitting that it was rubbing, and the wheel could not be rotated by hand. Simple solution was to put the errant tyre on the rear.

This experience is one reason why I suspect low tyre pressures - if it is rubbing all the time then it's obvious (and audible). If it's not rubbing all the time then it must be deflecting under lateral load for some reason.

Dave
i have to agree with Dave regarding low pressures and side wall stiffness under laterall load but be aware that the TPMS, if it's working properly only flags up a drop in pressure of 0.2 Bar or more this is only 3.00psi and just a drop more in PSI and it is all over.

I am running 255 Vreds, and a while back, TPMS came on, turned a corner and i was almost running on the rim. Took the wheel off - i then saw the cut in the tyre and blamed the so called knobbly bit - but it was a puncture first - then the tyre deformed -side wall then cut on the knobbly bit.

i learnt at the cost of £170.00. To manually check my tyre pressure twice a week - 40psi all round- resetting TPMS if required and so far fingers crossed no further issues.
