My Vredestein had a 6 inch slash across the inner edge even though the rest of the tyre had 3-4mm of tread left.
Hmm - lots of venting going on here - but a question if I may. If you had "a 6 inch slash across the inner edge" then preumably it must be circumferential (ie round the tyre) not across the wall, or across the tread. If "Ol knobbly" were to blame the tyre would be worn through to the canvas right round the tyre, not just a six inch slash.

Sounds to me like the damage to the tyre occurred in the course of the blowout, rather than vice versa - and to me it sounds like you ran over a piece of debris in the road which gashed the tyre.

Just check your alignment and Tyres pressures are correct. Many run 275 without issue....

Presumably you two (GP & Dave) are running spacers with your front 275/30's? 10mm?

If the suspension bushes are worn then the whole hub carrier can find itself in the wrong position causing excess wear to the inside edge of the tyre under cornering. In this case the tyre remains in the correct position with respect to the hub carrier and knobbly bit.

Not saying it's not the knobbly bit, but it could be explained by other things. Including impact damage which caused a hernia which then rubbed on the knobbly bit.

It's the "6 inches" that gives pause - if they tyre was rubbing on the suspension you would expect damage all around the circumference.
Just to clear up any confusion here. The damage was around the whole edge of the tyre - the tear was where the sidewall had given up the ghost - it has to go somewhere in the end.

Had new ones fitted today so could get under the car. The other front tyre was exactly the same - was torn into but not yet blown - probably had only days to survive. The two rears fitted at the same time are perfect. This is not a tyre defect.

The "knobble" on both sides was scrubbed clean - a shiny silver bump standing out in the otherwise grime covered wheel arch.

Geometry was definately not invloved as it was pretty clear to see that the tears on both tyres were in an area of the sidewall that would never touch the road surface no matter how bad the tracking was.

There are photos on this site of the same tyres with almost exactly the same damage - if it's happened to you you'll know what I mean. If it hasn't then be warned it may do and short of getting under the car every week, the damage is very hard to spot because of its location and the limited access under the wheel arch.

What confuses me the most is why the Pirellis I had on previously were absolutely fine but the Vreds have done this - Do they maybe flex more under cornering?

Only job for me this weekend is to buy an angle grinder and sort it.

SA - Do you recall what the psi was of the remaining Vred before it was taken off? Is your TPMS active?

There was a guy on here not long ago who had a set of tyres put on and his car wouldn't even get of the ramp due to them scrubbing. He went through 2 other sets (if i remember right of the same size? before it was ok.

Digger, he has said his tpms was off. I think mine are from when i brought it cause i had a slow puncture on the back and didn't have a warning.
To be sure i think the only thing to do is remove ol knobbly bit. Can't really see why it is on there for strength reasons but i'm no designer.
