Sidelights
No more LED failures since the one above.
To be fair, the first one was due to my kak-handedness in trying to install the bulb. It was a physical failure rather than an internal one. So I've only had one LED fail in about 15 months. And that was replaced no questions asked. Might be worth trying BigAustin's link above too, if that ebay seller still exists. (The website filter at work wont let me see the ling that chunky posted, so I can't compare)

I've just been back through my emails and i bought these "UH6W2.5W+ H6W BAX9 - 9mm BC Offset Pins (Pair)Ver II 30%Brighter (UH6W2.5W+)" about 18 months ago. I did have 1 fail fairly quickly, but just ordered another set and replaced the faulty one (it flashed randomly!) and have not had a problem since. No problems on the DIS other than when it did actually fail.

2003 S4 Avant, Moro Blue,
Cheers for the reply. Picking 'H6W BAX9' would leave these options. I'm liking the last of the three, pair for £9.

There seem to be lots with multi leds now. The one linked from the RS4 thread appears to have eight (but is sadly a different connection).

Those are the ones that I used too, from memory.chris.s wrote:I've just been back through my emails and i bought these "UH6W2.5W+ H6W BAX9 - 9mm BC Offset Pins (Pair)Ver II 30%Brighter (UH6W2.5W+)" about 18 months ago. As they're apparently the brightest that they sell and are guaranteed for a year. £13.20 if you buy two. They also have overtemp protection.
Plus it looks like the LEDs are pointing forwards, which makes more sense to me (not sure if it actually makes any difference?)

Strange - why are those sold individually, and the others in pairs? Ordered two of the 'bullet' single leds suggested, plus also the pair which house two leds in each unit which have been available less than a year. Will report back on these dual units. Good to have some spares in case they pop when I'm away / abroad etc (I think you are meant to carry spare bulbs in France anyway?)
Thanks Marv and Co for assistance. Thought it better to fish this useful thread [which I bookmarked last year] out the archive rather than start a new one.

The ones Marv has shown above are the new model of what i kept having problems with. These are the ones i have in the rs - http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/501194t10-mi ... -2170.html
I know they are a different fitting but they have been fine, i also know they say don't put by heat source cause they don't have a heat shield but a mate of mine has had them in his astra for over a year now with no problems.

I did say above that they were a different fitting. I was just saying that the sky scraper type have been ok heat wise. Just looked on ultraleds site and they only do 3 types of side light bulb for the s4 nowIan_C wrote:The connection looks totally different though?

No worries, i didn't word it very well. Infact, i have 2 leds for the s4 in the garage if you want them. Problem is, 1 is a new model and 1 is slightly older modelIan_C wrote:Apologies - thought you meant "I know they are a different fitting but they have been fine" as in they would work with the S4 headlamps.

Diddit. Ordered Thursday night, hit my doormat Saturday morning when I was at work, very rapid.
Removing the left and right plastic cowls and the plastic air intake duct only involves two screws just in front of the slam panel. The backs of the headlight have a wire clip that pivots either end and uses an 'over dead centre' method. Unclips with one finger simply by pushing down. Remove the plastic backs of each headlight - with a bit of wiggling you can get them out the engine bay. The bulb holder has a lug on either side - squeeze these and pull the bulb holder straight backwards. The bulbs come out the holder just like a bayonet household bulb - you push them in, twist anti clockwise and pull them out. New leds in, key in ignition, sidelight dash dial on, bulbs on, no DIS warnings. Reverse above process to 'rebuild', double checking you have left nothing foreign under the bonnet before dropping.
The only minor note is to push the bonnet release cable down as you put the front of the air intake duct back under the slam panel. I couldn't work out why the duct wouldn't line up, and realised after a minute the duct was catching on the bonnet release cable hidden under the slam panel.
As mentioned, I ordered two sets of leds - a pair of the 'bullet' single leds, plus also a pair which house two leds in each unit. Fitted are the dual units. They match the xenons wonderfully, meaning I no longer have the horrid yellow sidelights ruining the lovely crisp xenons. Very impressed with the results. Photograph shows just sidelights - not with xenons!
