shredded tyres - the last straw!

Back again and not happy!

Simple question. After an OSF blow out yesterday I soon found on here reference to the "knobbly bit". My Vredestein had a 6 inch slash across the inner edge even though the rest of the tyre had 3-4mm of tread left.

Is this problem specific to the tyre, the particular car or are some people just unlucky?

Do we have a definative list of which tyres will actually fit properly without shredding themselves? Wanna get rid now but don't like the idea of handing a death sentence to the next owner so looking for the right tyre!

F**ing Audi - how they can design a car with such an issue and not have a safety recall beggars belief! My daughter was in the car but thankfully I was only travelling slowly. Clarkson quoted it on Top Gear as "the best built car in the world today" - how wrong was he? They may aswell have built the thing out of glass!

Will stick to BMW's and motorbikes in future!

The knobbly bit is definitely worthy of a sticky thread guide of its own, though concrete conclusions about brand of tyre seem to be hit and miss. I've been through this pain a couple of times now, the last time over xmas. I've got Michelin PS2 R01 on now and they seem to be fine, although my knobbly bits have been worn down.

Hmmm I own a beemer as well as the 6 but i wont use verds on mine due to the issues with them I have hankook 18 as winter tires and bridgestone p 19 for summer use ..................IMHO no tire should have to be cut to fit as it is looking for trouble

Ole Knobbly is the bump on the inside of the suspension arm as opposed to the tyre's knobbles. There is a pic around here somewhere. . .be right back. . .

I've seen the photos of the shredded Vreds on here. The bit I'm struggling to find is the section of the handbook that tells me which tyres I can fit without killing myself. Also no reference in handbook to the crap suspension system, paper brake disks, cardboard oil cooler pipes, glass gearbox, countless s**t sensors.......the list goes on + on.

I think I've just fell out of love with the 6 especially after the blow out! I've thrashed my 5-series BMW up to the same mileage as my 6 in a third of the time and never ever had a single fault to date with it! It feels as good today as the day it was delivered - it's just in a different league. The next fast saloon I get will be built in Munich!

The 6 really is fun but is just too much of a liability and frankly if I wanna out drag a porsche I can do that on my bike with less effort and certainly for a lot less money!

havent got my handbook to hand but this is the offical size in the dealers brouchere 9jx19 255/35r 19
winter tires 7.5jx18 225/45r 18

LOL its ok to vent SA. I too fail to understand how knobbo appeared to circumvent Audi's R & D dept, let alone their safety gurus!!

Out of interest has knobby been in existence since the dawn of the 6 or did it appear early in its production run?

255/35's 19's Ultrac Sessanta's - that's what my car shredded! As I've asked - is this an issue with Vreds or is it an issue with the car? I really do think it needs addressing. One day someone will plough through a bus stop because of a blow out. I for one wouldn't like to explain to the police why my tyre is blatantly illegal and has just caused several deaths. I'm pretty sure that if the same issue was evident in Mondeos or Corsas the manufacturers would have recalled the cars and dealt with it.

As it happens, there are very few RS6's around so they don't give a <beep>!

It's just a joke that anyone driving a modern car should have to even consider a problem like this.

Deffo a car issue, which is why I asked about knobbo's D of B. It could be a result of Audi deciding to beef up the suspension arm during R&D period but failing to provide suitable tyre clearance as a result? Just a thought. Having said that I have yet to study the arm up close to form a better opinion.

I think what may be useful is some sound advice as to which tyres will fit without a problem. My previous tyres were Pirellis and they had worn down perfectly. Only reason I went for the Vreds was because of good feedback on here which makes me think that generally people have no problem with them. It seems that an angle grinder can cure the problem but is this advisable on a critical suspension component? I'm sure M5 owners don't go through all this :)

I may well be wrong but i have an inkling tyre pressures have a crucial part to play in any potential for rubber/knobbly interaction!?

Lol. Good job the tyre pressure sensors on the 6 are as reliable as the rest of the car then!! Took mine off and threw them in the boot 2 years ago. :)

Did you do any research on the RS6 before you brought it? All these things are well known problems and i'm sure you actually love the car and are just pi$$ed off due to a blow out. it is a poor design but i think it is only a couple of brands of tyre that rub so this isnt audi's fault but the tyre manufacturer.
Here's another thing, have you replaced both your front tyres so they are the same depth cause this could screw up your diff.
