Do Front of Rear Tyres wear fastest ?

Post by MB2 » Thu Dec 23, 2010 3:57 pm

I know I asked this before, but can't remember/search the answer ! Do the front tyres tend to wear quicker than the rears due to engine weight or do the rears wear faster due to 40/60 drive split ? Want to know which way should be rotating the tyres so they have best chance of wearing evenly.

i've had mine 10 months and it had new tyres on the front when i bought it.

5mm on the rears, and now the measurements are 5mm front and 3mm rears.

so the wear on mine has beeen consistent across the 4.

i think i'll change them all at the same time this time...

I've found that the fronts wear slightly faster, but not a great deal in it.

I'd say the wear ratio is about 55/45

I do have quite a good daily commute over the moors, so engine, brakes, steering etc get a good work out most days :D

Im sure i read in the manual that you should swap em round after a while to insure even wear? Nice big tyre bill at the time of replacement though.

So if the consensus is that the fronts wear slightly quicker than the rears, at what stage would you recommend swapping them over?

Just checked mine and I have 5mm rear and just under 4mm at the front. Given this it would seem that I should be swapping them around soon.

I know that 1.6 is the legal limit but do other forum members swap them over with more tread left? I have P Zeros and I am looking forward to getting them off the car. They seem to really suffer from tramlining.

Have a good Christmas all

When they're down to that you can feel the grip is less, especially when it's wet or slushy as the sipes don't have the same capacity to take the water/slush away.
