Group buy - custom discs & bells for RS6
Group buy - custom discs & bells for RS6
Like many of us, I have been frustrated at the price of genuine Audi front and rear discs, and that fact that there are no aftermarket options available. I have therefore been looking at alternatives, and am in the process of negotiating prices for custom rotors and bells to be made up for our cars. The advantages of these will be less rotational weight, due to the alloy bells, cheaper replacement costs, as only the rotors will need to be changed once you've made the initial outlay, and the benefit of grooved rotors that don't crack like drilled ones.
At the moment it looks like we will need to order at least TEN front and rear complete sets to make this worthwhile, but my estimates are looking like the following:
Front & rear bell and rotor setup - £900
Replacement rotor cost per pair - £350 front, £250 rear
Obviously the initial outlay isn't that great a saving, but beyond that, the cost of new rotors is much cheaper than OEM.
I would therefore be interested to know what level of GENUINE interest there would be for these kits, and if we get enough then perhaps I can achieve an even better saving.
If you guys can have a think and post your interest then that would be a great start.
Cheers,
Mart.

Just a thought, but I like a number of other B5 guys are running the RS6 front brakes on our cars.
Would you be able to offer a price for just the front rotors and bells? If so, I can post this over on AudiSRS and am sure it should drum up some interest.

Interesting initiative, though I doubt I will join you.
I would have thought to buy in most people would want to know source/reputation, what grade of steel etc is proposed and comparative wear rate vs OEM, and any warranty that is offered. Well, I would anyway for something as critical as discs.
Has anyone here suffered cracking on the drilled discs? I don't recall any posts on this in the past four years, but I may be getting old! Last time a garage alleged this to me, I argued, got them tested, and ended up with a new set of discs free! The alleged cracks were just the micro corrosion you get along the edges of the pads when the car is stationary for a while.
Good luck anyway

Good points. The people I am approaching are Hi Spec Motorsport and Godspeed brakes. No idea on wear rates etc, but I have had HiSpec brakes before and they are well recognised among the performance car community. Godspeed do a lot of trade with the Subaru and Evo community and they seem very happy.

Godspeed brakes are second to none and are better than the OEM items (well they were on my subaru) I wouldnt think twice about using disks from GS havent heard of the other company though

Maybe worth trying AP as well.
@Daveperc - I've had two sets of RS6 drilled discs with cracking around the holes

Not usually one to rant, but what was the point in your post? I am going to the trouble to try and secure alternative disc suppliers for the RS6 and all you can do is moan and criticize? Why is there always someone like you on every forum? Fair enough if they're not up to your standards, but if they're not for you, why comment at all - why not just keep quiet?Daveperc wrote:Mart

Just seems hugely rude and unnecessary.

Blimey , someone having a bad day ??
Thought the points raised / questions asked were not unreasonable , and he did wish you luck , as I am sure we all do
keep us updated on your progress , if you can get these new ones about half the weight of the OEM ,, I am in

RE: Re: RE: Group buy - custom discs & bells for RS6
Not really, just a little defensive after what I deemed to be rather a critical and negative post.
Will let you know on weights and firm prices when I get some concrete costs.
Apologies for the rant!

Good points!
Accepted! And no offence intended.Apologies for the rant!
I searched on "Cracked + drilled + discs" and the only ref that came up for the 6 is http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... illed+disc - dated 2003, and doesn't actually say that this was the problem. I'll take your word for it Bluethunder - were you tracking the car? Don't think cracking on OEM discs is an issue in general.
Clearly reducing the unsprung weight is a good idfea, and if you are planning on doing more than 60-80K road (or a lot less on a track I guess) then there would be some cost savings too.
Good luck (as before) with the group buy
And happy Christmas
Dave

I've definately got to get my rears done asap, so could be interested.
Regards Marts and Daves comments, I didn't think Daves comments were at all unreasonable, although I can see how Mart may feel they could be unhelpfull in his hope to get enough numbers to enable the group buy. But if some of the potential concerns can be addressed then Daves post will have in fact been helpful by giving people the chance to answer any fears others may have but didn't bother to ask.
Dave has been on here a long time and is respected so I don't believe there was any negativity in his intentions.
Mart, relax
the idea of finding a better cost solution to the discs on our cars is a great idea so long as the quality is right.
The best Audi would do the rears for when I asked was £270 a side, eurocarparts have some oem fronts at £233 a side strangely....

not wishing to be negative, merely factual, but the oem discs have alloy bells.
any weight saving will be by reducing either the thickness of the alloy bell, or the mass ( & hence heat capacity) of the disc itself.
but being positive, i do like the idea in the future of an alternative to oem, provided they perform similarly.
i changed all mine only 5k ago, so still okay for a few miles yet...
cheers
