Bloody hell, lucky escape there. What make of tyre was it?

I would hate to think the amount of damage it would cause to a car that has been lowered.

VW put self sealing tyres on some of their models apparently according to a mag. Thy will apparently seal a 5mm punture and not with the sticky gunk a future change perhaps.

Tyre looks shocking! glad you are all OK.

Dave, is this the same jack as for a standard A4 ? do you have Part No.

I didn't think a stock jack would work due to extend side sills

Cheers (sorry for the hi-jack - pun lol)

It's an 18" space saver that I bought from my local Audi dealer, fitted with a Continental space saver tyre. Remember the RS4 could be ordered with 18" wheels so it fits OK over the front calipers, and it has a rolling radius within a few mm of the OE tyres.

I use the genuine Audi jack, also bought from my local Audi dealer, which fits in the "wheel well" to the right rear of the battery. I modified the plastic with the aid of a Stanley knife so it fits neatly in there.

Dave,

Where did you get the spacesaver tyre from and what size is it?
Also do you have the part number for the wheel?

Thanks

Yep standard A4 jack.

The jacking points are inboard of the sills and the jack sticks out underneath the sills, so the extended sills make no difference.

Jack - 8E0 011 031 N

Wheel - 1K0 601 027 B 03C

Tyre - Cotinental CST17 125/70R18 99M from bestbuytyres.co.uk

Cheers for clearing that up Dave.

Funny how no jack is supplied. Our A2, despite not having a spare like the RS has the full tool set including a jack.

prices from Audi;
8E0 011 031 N JACK RRP 21.73 + VAT
1K0 601 027 B 03C WHEEL DISC RRP 62.19 + VT

£70 inc VAT for the spacesaver tyre from Selly Oak Tyres on 0121 471 4702

£168.61 in total with VAT (at 17.5%)

If anyone wants this I can round up all the parts and have them ready to be collected from the above tyre place which is in Birmingham B29 7DL just off A38 or mail order will be plus about £15.

He also quoted £170 + VAT for Bridgestones 255 35 19 (which I have on mine and are excellent for road use - not used em on track)

Very helpful post Neckarsulm. Thanks for getting all the info together.

If you don't have return to home breakdown cover then I would strongly advise getting the above. In fact for the hassle factor I had on Sunday I think a spare on the car should be mandatory. Just a shame it takes up load space and won't fit in the normal location. Not sure my two dogs are going to apreciate a spare wheel in their area.

Good price that, think I spent that much buying a used wheel and tyre.

This would make a good group buy ! this coupled with a wheel storage bag as I found on ebay would make a great breakdown kit.

So just an update on my tyre drama...

I was able to source a used (5mm remaining - non repaired) P Zero tyre on ebay from www.usedtyresales.com for £80 delivered (very good service). It is a perfect match spec and wear wise for the opposite tyre. The local tyre depot had a job getting what remained of the failed tyre off the rim but suceeded in the end so now I have four wheels back on my wagon :-)

I learnt a lot from this episode including...

- TMS is useless

- A spare wheel is a must

- Audi assistance was very good

- There are actually five variants of the Pirelli P Zero235/35 R19 tryes

- Full recovery services are expensive so make sure you pay the extra and get full cover

- Finally the RS4 behaves well on 3 wheels ;-)

Looking forward to some puncture free motoring now.

Sorry I should have said TMS is useless... in this scenario.

Would much prefer a space saver as it is guaranteed to get you mobile whether it be a puncture or blow out.

Just so we aren't all paranoid of the same thing happening to us, can you tell everyone how/why you ignored the TPMS warnings :)
