RS6 Repair Costs????

Post by Thacker » Mon Aug 23, 2010 4:55 pm

Hi all,

I'm taking the very risky step of looking at a cheap RS6 Tomorrow, done 115k. So I need to budget some repairs to see if it is actually cheap in the long run?

I've read the buyers guide and had a bit of a search round, so I know about some of the known concern areas.

In reality what are they likely to cost and where's the best place to go?

DRC is this an Audi agent only repair or are there specialists that can now do it? And how much? Whats the best price for coilovers? Is there a drc warning light if they fail? If there is how do you get round this with coil overs?

Gerabox / Torque converter, if this fails on the way home whats the damage?

Brakes, is it really £700 for discs and pads or are there cheaper options? The car will never be on a track but will be tootling round with the kids in most of the time with the Mrs and then the odd spirited drive to my work.

Thanks in advance guys?

Ed

Read the Unofficial buying guide.

Brakes £700 more like £1k.

For what it's worth, this guide may provide some more food for though also (even though it's a bit out of date now).
(Not my work, by the way!!)

I would have thought (hoped more like) that the higher milers have had the big bits go wrong and have all been replaced/repaired but that being said i don't think id get one without an Audi warranty just to be safe

at this sort of mileage and age ... make sure the following have been done

- cam cover gaskets (big job)
- cambelt change & waterpump (big job)
- gearbox service
- DRC changed out or warrantied
- Alternator (this WILL GO otherwise - £700 audi)
- discs pads and tyres

if not, prepare for a bill for a good couple of grand

the purchase price is only ever half the story

Is that genuine audi supply only? If so are there other options?

Does anyone know the prices for these jobs? As I'm trying to factor them into the price?

Brakes I could do myself, and fit coilovers but is any thing special needed to disconnect drc electronics? (Are there electronics on it). Do any specialists repair drc?

How much will a gearbox repair / recon cost?

there are no DRC electronics

its not worth repairing and can only be done by Audi

just replace for coilovers

gearbox will cost £5k for a replacement ...

Ed,

Drc has no electronics and a set of coilys will set you back about £1500 from Units for H&Rs.
In my 3 years of ownership I had

1 gearbox £8k fitted by audi
4x sets of DRC fitted by Audi £1600 a pop
1x Set of coilys (should have done it first) £1500 unit 20
1x set ARB's approx £500 unit 20
2x new intercoolers £1200 unit 20
Cam belt service wp, tensioners and stat & 50k service £1500 unit 20 (Audi quoted £4.5k)
2 new heads £12k unit 20
2 new turbos £circa £4k unit 20
Mods:
Full catless milltek circa £1800 (i think- can remember) unit 20
big brake upgrade c £1200 unit 20
C6 calipers about the same unit 20
various maps £1200 unit 20 & Viper
various services totalling about £4k
Tyres 8 sets of tyres @ £850 per set
and last year £13k in fuel for 40k miles.

Add on about £5k for bits and peices and there yhou have it. What it COULD cost you.....
It's all Bollox.
Half of what you read is bull and the other half is all <beep>.

Is the probability of these things happening pretty high? I used to have a Skyline gtr 480bhp and that was good as gold never had a fault!

No, by all means not certainty, I was fairly "unlucky" to have these faults. DRC IS a certainty, Gb near enough one if not looked after, other stuff, well, depends!

Where are you based?

Grizz at unit 20 is brilliant, will guide you expertly, will also do vehicle inspections for you.....could be value for money in the long run- I E save you from buying a dog!

Midlands about 30 miles north of Birmingham, I was actually wanting a S4 avant b6 but noticed Rs6 dropping to around £10k mark for high milers. So made me think? And always loved Rs6!

Drove a S4 and felt a bit gutless compared to what I'm used to. But maybe a safer option?

Car will only do about 3k a year so fuel not really an isssue, but £,000's repair bills will be!
