That new Shell fuel.
That new Shell fuel.
I have boasted many a time about how my car will do 500 miles on a tank on a long run. I don't bother checking what i get around town as it doesnt really count for anything. Ive done the Poole to Glasgow trip afew times now and normally average just over 32mpg. I only ever use V-Power and i have no reason to use anything different. Makes sense to keep it that way too as MRC mapped it on V-Power.
Last weekend i had to drive from Poole to Telford, then on to Rotherham, back to Telford and then home to Poole again. I filled up at the Shell garage in the morning and reset the computer. Shell are now selling the supposedly 'more efficient' fuel which is also included in the V-Power range. Its supposed to save you £1 per fill on a normal car with a 55 litre tank. I never pay attention to these gimics as its usually crap. I filled it from empty with the stuff and off i went.
Cutting a long story short: On the way home from Telford on the last leg i thought i'd check my readings to reassure myself that nothing had changed. What i saw was: 34.5mpg. I check the distance i had gone and i had covered 480 miles. Looking at the guage it appeared i had just shy of a 1/4 left in the tank. Normally at this point the Mrs is panicing about making it to the next garage and im scanning the sat nav for the closest available Shell pump.
The fuel range was reading 60 miles so i thought, what the heck i'll just keep going to see how far i can get. 60 miles past and it was now reading 10 miles on the range. The guage wasnt quite on the red line yet but it wasnt far off. When i hit 550 miles on the odo i came across a Shell station and filled up again. Just as i rolled onto the forecourt the range hit 0 but i reckon i could have got anothe 20 miles out of it without cause for concern.
Now, having never achieved this distance in the past, could it be possible that this new fuel actually works when driving like a granny? I set cruise at 68mph (gps not speedo) and had the aircon in econ mode. The roads were quiet and only had stop offs at my main destinations. If it is the case, then thats a saving of approx £2.40 a tank in the 6 and that aint bad.
Anyone else tried it and compared it to the old stuff?

RE: That new Shell fuel.
So is this a new V-power with fuel save fuel? I thought it was just the regular petrol and diesel that was fuel save?
What speeds do you do to get this MPG cos I'll be off to France soon and washoping it'd do over 500 miles on a tank on a steady cruise. EDIT: just saw the 68mph and aircon i economy. Wil give it a try.
Due to get a reworked gearbox remap so it chages the gear changes so I can use the torque.

I am using the "momentum" fuel formerly known as the 99RON from Tesco. I get about 350 miles per tank full around town and it pushes up towards 420 on motorways. I 'll try the new v-power next week and see if the mpg improves. Thanks for the info
The top grade fuels may be 5-9 pence per litre more but the extra mpg you get is well worth it.
Not complaining about fuel costs per se but nice to get the most you can out of tank full.

Def depends on the type of roads you use and how many cold starts. I filled up once and drove home at a steady speed including a climb up Glenshee and did 50 miles and had allegedly 540 still in the tank!!el_ringo wrote:Im lucky to get 300, Eddie you must have the patience of a saint. Going to try for 600 lol
Talking of fuel prices. Shell are the cheapest in my area at the mo with Unleaded at £1.12 a litre. V-Power is £1.19 a litre.
I may have patience, but my license is also immaculate. lol. I do wring its neck from time to time.

I just got 345 miles from 3/4 tank (according to fuel gauge) on a trip to and from Aylesbury last week from Lincoln. Apparently, I had 100 miles to go, but as I have to make the exact same journey this afternoon, I filled up again! I always used V-Power and heartily recommend it. It's worth the extra payment as you get many more miles from a tank

I saw improved mpg when it was mapped. Something to do with better fueling efficiency.
Despite my 550 mile single tank runs on the motorway, £40 only got me 140 miles this weekend. Shows its only more economical in certain conditions. Still worth its weight on long runs.

Like i said on srs too, if anyone wants to pay for the fuel i'd happily take them out for the day as a demo. Might be a bit boring though.
