could it be possible that there was some sort of blowby - ie sticking ring.... this would pressurise the sump and start to blow vapour and oil out at a greater rate then normal through the breather and back into the inlet?

just a thought.....

those gouges are deep, that looks like metal to metal...
my guess is that is the ring gap(s) 3 parallel sets, and they are deformed due to possible detonation...too high Pme
the detonation caused by the piston coking...which imo was caused by the oil from below making it up thru the scoring...

I would pay to see the oil filter and sump

My theory is that the problems I reported more than 12 months ago now; performance loss, slight pinging that turned into lots of pinging was just left too long. I understand I was the first in Australia to report this problem. Even looking at the US/UK websites, I was probably in the top ten to first report something (on forums I mean). Audi just didn't know what to do (and what the cause was if you look at the start of the AZ thread).

Do you remember this pic:

You can see a peice of carbon broken off. This was a pretty big bit as you could see the valve underneath. I didn't take any other pics, but I'd see this everything the manifold was off. The valves in this pics aren't too bad (I think it was only after 2000km) but I can't help imagine what was falling off when I first reported the problem

PS: I also get the theory something happened to cause excess build up and that the buildup just made things worse. Just not sure what that is yet.

2manytoys hopefully audi will give you a completely new engine. Sometimes cars, humans, animals are just built or born bad no matter how much love and attention you give to them they remain bad the only solution is scrap them or put them down.

Yep, that's what Audi are looking at doing now. Hopefully "RS4 Take 2" will be good. The support from Audi has been good, so we'll see what happens shortly.

2manytoys, someone else may have a similar issue. Worth finding out if it is the exact same issue.

Its hard to imagine the rings were sealing completely. What if the rings had never fully seated to begin with? That would just accelerate the whole process. But without a cylinder leak-down test, inspection of the pistons and rings (disassembled), an oil analysis and at least some knowledge of the oil consumption rate, all you can do is look at the pictures. That's just not adequate. Hopefully, Audi will give Mal the details directly.

that's a heck of a coincidence been around since jan and for his first post he experiences the exact same problem as in this post... smells fishy

since there have been no other issues like this with RS4's reported in the last 3 years with this issue...now they start popping up? I don't buy it

it's very funny YOU are the one in the thread getting the problem out of him...considering the join dates it might be prudent for an admin to do an IP check
