OK so I'm home now, sessions 2, 3, 4 just got faster and faster. In 3 I was full on, max accel, max brake through the whole 30min session. The RS4 ROCKS!! No brake fade, no problems. In session 2 I nearly ran out of gas and had to slow a bit near the end, I started with over a quarter remaining but 30min at full bore takes a lot of juice. In the third run I got very confident with the car, it's not hard to trust it and the way it four wheel drifts through the fast corners is quite rewarding. I think this is where the 60 / 40 rear torque bias really shines. I managed to pass a Porsche 996 turbo and totally lost the C6 corvette. The same corvette managed to grid before me in session four and I was all over his bumper like a bad Disneyland sticker. He was shown the blue flag three times and would not let me get by. (for our club that means "faster traffic behind, move aside"- I am assuming your flags are the same?) Seems like your Caterham drivers are like our Corvettes (and Mustangs). I had enough and did a stop and go in the pits and went out for some more fun. I did talk to him after and he was completely oblivious to the events. I should check his car for a rear view mirror. The day was really fun and the car exeeded my expectations. The most fun you can have with four doors and a truck. Running past a few "pure" sports cars was just icing. Now I know with better drivers that likely would not have happened but today there was no doubt, my RS4 was the fastest in my run group. I have some thinking to do now and the path to make it even better is now becoming clearer.
In the tire dept, I blead(sp?) the tire pressure back down to 41 psi (from 47) after run 1. I checked again after run 2 and they had become hot enough to raise the pressure back to 46, more bleeding! Things were smoking hot!! Much more literally than you may think, one Audi S4 (B5) came in with flames shooting out the wheel well and the driver jumped out shouting "No Brakes!!"to which the terrified pit crew replied "And your car is on Fire!!" After 3 extinguishers the flames died down and it smoldered for another 10 mins. A flat bed was ordered up. . Talking with the driver he was not overly upset and told me what happened was the tubo inlet manifold coming from the header had cracked and the hot exhaust had pretty much melted everything in the engine bay in that area. He was running 20psi boost and getting about 500hp so maybe some failures are expected. I would have been freaking out had that happened to my car. Luckily he is a trained mechanic and does his own work so it will at least save him a bit of the cost but the whole engine has to be pulled and every hose changed and the bay has to be rewired. Nasty. I asked him if pics are OK and he said no problem and took lots of pics himself for you tube so I could post pics here but I am not sure if that is not in poor taste. The Conti Sport Contact 3 were not bad. I did not destoy them in a day so over all not bad. Not as good as the Dunlop Star spec I had on my WRX but I don't think it comes in our size. Cheep and sticky if it does.
As far as the suspention I am on the stock DRC shocks. After tracking that setup it works very well even though the body motion is as tightly controled as my WRX. Despite that, it seems to stick well and absorbs the curbing without protest. I do have to say though I am listening for clunking sounds now. Keep in mind that I am always paranoid after a track day so we'll see after a few days. My thought was that if the DRC failed I would prob go to KW or Ohlins rather than replace the original shocks. I am very temped to go with the bigger rear ARB so that will hopefully happen in the next week. I would like to do a proper before / after test with numbers and such and not just feel so I am giving that thought.
Can anyone identify the source of the grease that flowed out from between the mating surface of the hub and the wheel itself. Should I be worried - I don't think so. Sorry, attachments are in reverse order. PS look at the amount of brake dust in the holes on the rotor!!!
Prep advice for track day. Stock pads OK?
