Anyone had an E60/61 M5?
Anyone had an E60/61 M5?
Toying with the idea of relegating the 6 to the garage for a while to reduce the mileage (below its already weekend-only useage) and getting a 2nd hand M5 Touring (new shape) to fill the gap until the C6 comes into purchase range. Having chatted with a couple of BMW fans they tried to convince me that the 5 was the way ahead. Im not so sure to be honest, especailly when you look at the power / performance figures, and having blown away a couple....... I have heard that the M5 has to be driven hard to wring out the neccessary performance and experience wheras my current 6 is really on the ball no matter where i am in the rev range.
Have any of you guys had an M5? Or have you experienced it in any way? Also, how does the interior trim and build quality compare? I dont want to buy into something thats going to result in me using the 6 anyway due to the M5 being a poor substitute.

RE: Anyone had an E60/61 M5?
no point IMO, if you use the '6 on weekends...
the depreciation you'll lose on an M5 will only delay the purchase of a C6

RE: Anyone had an E60/61 M5?
Just buy a C6 S6 avant, cheaper than an M5 touring, 5.2L V10 435 BHP, job done.

RE: Re: RE: Anyone had an E60/61 M5?
I ran an E60 M5 saloon for 18 months and 20k miles...
A standard M5 is slower in a straight line than my current MRC tuned C5 RS6 Avant, but from a handling perspective the M5 is in a class of it's own. It feels remarkably agile for it's size when pushing on, even in Welsh B road territory!
The lack of torque means you have to work the gears but the SMGIII box is amazing when used properly; in the right gear and P500 mode you can sling-shot out of bends with scorching pace that will leave most smaller 'sports' cars way behind.
As with everything, tyres are very important - the OEM Conti's are shocking and result in huge TC interference, but fit a set of PS2's and it transforms the car into something that when driven enthusiastically will leave behind a 996 Turbo...
I got out just before the prices collapsed on the E60 M5's so I was lucky, however when the prices stabilise again I will be getting another one.
Main dealer running costs were also substantially cheaper than the C5 RS6...

Just be patient man and get the c6 you want sooner than you would splashing out on another car in the meantime!?

Eddie, I have an E60 M5 and RS6. I would sum it up as follows:
M5 is a quicker car in a straight line, but I accept it would be slower compared to a modded RS6. It's a much better car to drive, the interior is better, the seats are miles better, the steering is much better and the noise is better. The SMG is not great but acceptable. The only thing the RS6 does better is that any idiot can drive the RS6 quickly in almost any weather. The M5 takes much more skill and courage to drive quickly, especially in the wet.
Having said all that, aren't both cars aimed broadly at the same market? Therefore why not go for something different?
Maybe an M6 might be a better bet, it's likely to hold it's value better.
Gratuitous pic. It's the only M5 in Moonstone that I am aware of.

I'd hold out for a C6. It's got 200BHP more and sounds better...
