RS2 brakes

Digging up an old thread, but for good reason.

The 2 needs new rear pads and discs etc, so I thought I would approach the usual Audi places for a set, lo and behold NLA.
So I,ve done a bit of digging and the part numbers on the above thread are pretty much like it (all at Porsche) but maybe it is the time to have a definitive guide to the Porsche part numbers and models from etc.
I'll post up the rears when we confirm they fit.

Isn't the problem always that where Porsche used their stock parts when developing the RS2, once it was in production Audi made their own versions?

I had a long chat with Ray Northway at Northway Porsche about this (with the old discs in front of us) and he kept saying things like, "Well they could be... but they might be... they look sort of..." meaning, "Yes, very similar but not exactly the same."

BTDT luckily through my Audi dealer who did not charge me when the parts ordered from Porsche turned out not to fit despite posts on here and other websites saying they did. My advice be very careful.
AFAIK all these parts are still available from Audi in fact parts for the RS2 don't seem to be too bad in terms of availability.

Good time to consider the upgrade to the Big red set from the Turbo. So much better.

Ermm the rear brake pads and discs are the same size whether you have Big reds or not.

I was thinking full upgrade, importing the set from Germany. Cheaper perhaps.

It was the best upgrade I made to the car, having tried pagid pads etc. The brakes on the RS2 were a compromise, Porsche had wanted Audi to adopt the big Reds, but because of economy Audi chose the brakes of the lighter Porsche afaik.

I also upgraded to the big reds on my car but mostly from the standpoint that parts are more easily/cheaply available for the big reds and I got fed up of paying for new discs and pads. Having tracked the car at Brands Hatch on standard brakes when other cars including an S4 and Mercedes E55 boiled their brakes I am not sure that one can judge the standard brakes as sub standard. The other comment I would make is that most people when upgrading to the big reds are upgrading from a set of worn out corroded discs/pads and therefore the upgrade feels subjectively better than it is in real measured terms.
There are some downsides with the big red kit - brake pad wear is higher because the discs are drilled and disc corrosion seems worse.

That's interesting to hear another side to the story as all other posts I've seen seem to only comment on the +ves of the Big Reds.

The biggest gripe I've found on mine (standard brake set up) is the build up of cr*p behind the brake pads :evil: (Alistair G pointed me in the right direction in this). I've had the n/s/r done on mine a few weeks back and now the n/s/f is giving me the same jip so it's back to the garage.

From the service history it seems the front calipers were cleaned 2 years ago (about 8k miles) but the problem has returned. The car has however had a period of doing very few miles and I think this has made the problem worse....i.e. the cr*p builds up with use and was then allowed to settle through lack of use.

Anyone else found the same and if so how often (generally) do you have to get your calipers cleaned up?

Just changed my discs and pads on the back.
If it helps, the pads I took off, were fitted by audi main dealer and the number is 96535293060. They are made by Textar. Now the pads I bought (made by textar) are for a 968. The Textar reference is slightly different and they are around 1 to 2 mm longer. They have Audi RS2 as well as Porsche 968 written on the box! So be careful. The discs were sport model (drilled) from a porsche 928.

All interesting stuff, the old tread we found to have some mistakes in part numbers but having a chat with the Porsche chap we may have got the right ones (apparently the RS2 does appear in an obscure place on thier system) we shall see. It also turned out to be a combination of bits from various Porsche models, this may all be wrong I'll know soon.
I've never had a problem with build up behind the pads, as yet, but I'm fussy about keeping them clean.

And pray tell us what you've been doing now for the car to require new rear discs anyway? I'd only recently replaced them when you bought it!

Righto chaps here are the Porsche part numbers as correct today (they've changed over the years).
Porsche rear brakes for the RS2.
Rear brake discs 951.352.041.01
Rear brake pads 964.351.939.03
Pad shims 996.352.086.00
Pad shims 996.352.086.02
Thats whats fitted on mine now and they're great!

GOOD Info.
Mine need replacing soon too. Wheres the best place to buy these, Porsche dealer or an independant ?

Please clarify if your car has standard brakes or uprated brakes (big reds)
