Coolant loosing

Post by cz.Garry » Mon Mar 01, 2010 9:50 pm

Hi, i've got another problem. I had bonet open and I can see my coolant was on minimum. I filled it to max. After some days I wanted to fill tank for cleaning windshield and realised that I'm again on minimum with coolant. Started little bit worried.

I started measure everyday and everything was ok. Till weekend. I've lost some cooland during weekend (-3mm in tank with coolant).

My hypothesis is:
During working days I only go slow to work (2x20km a day). Engine is cooled by 1 radiator which is OK.

During weekend, town is clear and using all performance (please don't judge me). Engine is hotter. There are 2 smaller radiators (am I correct?) and system opens largers cirque (via 2 smaller rads). There can be some hole.

am I correct are there 2 cirques (small cirque, lower temp -> 1 big rad); (bigger cirque, higher temp -> 3 rads) ?

Any idea is welcome.

I have just had to have my radiator replaced and also the oil cooler, car is out of warranty as well, gutted seems like a common problem mate, was a thread on this. do a search. It was only a small hole as well but was leaking, spotted it because i was at a level crossing near my home for about 15 min after coming back from edinburgh(30 miles), started to see some staem and could smell the coolant, got it checked by pressure test etc and the above needed done.

Oil cooler is nothing to do with it though, just happened at same time.

Yep, I've seen some owners here had problems with radiators. My car is out of warranty too. Friends of mine has device for pressure test so I have to book for it :/

Anyway, does someone know how coolant system works?? Are small rads using all time or only when engine is getting hotter?

How cold is it where you are at the moment ? Reason I ask is the G12 coolant does seem to expand & contract a fair bit - pressure test sounds like the way to go though. Had the exact same problem with my Golf - coolant light on, VW assist came out, pressure tested all OK but of course didn't carry coolant. Once topped up never had the problem again - hope you are as lucky !

I recently purchased my car and i had the same problem after one week, i filled it up and thought that it was something the dealer had forgot to fill up, but then one week later i was all out of coolant. Took it to the dealer and the replaced the radiator because there was a small crack in it, and the coolant ran out that way. it was replaced under warranty so i dont know the cost of it.

Both my aux rads need replacing too, common problem, assume it must be a poor design.

I top my coolant every couple of weeks, will do the job myself once the weather improves!

On the radiator on driver's side (EU version) I can see leek. :( Cost of rad from audi dealer is 230 euros. Odo has 50000 kms. Hope i won't change radiator every 50k kms :(.

typical that the EU price is significantly less than GBP!!
