Mine is also an 06 & came with something like 0500 firmware (the TMC symbol was crossed out/unavailable). I bought a DVD off eBay which included TMC support & upgraded the firmware automatically. You don't need to buy 2010 to get the latest firmware.

A 2007 & on disc 8P0 919 884 M or R will give you TMC, I bought 2008 AA version for 55 from eBay which upgraded the firmware to 0650 I think.

MMI is just some confusion it is nothing to do with the MMI systems it needs to be an RNS-E DVD - the PNs above should work for you, but make sure it is Western Europe DVD as there is Eastern Europe too !

You can also download the firmware & burn it to a disc but if you have 2006 disc would recommend gettting newer maps/TMC/firmware all together !

This is who I bought from - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0461847932

Has 2008 for 60 UKP & 2007 for 40 He also offers part-ex but I kept mine just in case needed it at a later date

Since 2007 the RNS-E SW has been at version 0650, so any DVD from 2007 on will give you the same SW version.

So why buy a 2010 DVD? To get newer maps so you don't have the experience of "driving through fields" as often!

It certainly won't allow you to use SDHC cards. As far as I am aware the only useful part of the firmware upgrade was the UK functionality of TMC (traffic jam avoidance) I think earlier FW upgrades gave a mute function to the volume button + uses the map to display the cars "altitude" so minor improvements really. I imagine all development of the RNS-E will have been finished now & 2007 will be the last upgrade.

See here for a more expert explanation -

is this true?
New features in SW 0650 are:

1) altimeter (like MMI)
2) no 400 files limit on SD cards
3) more sound settings (bass, highs, middle)
4) navi announcement from both speaker (left/right)
5) title scrolling in the DIS

Will try to help as have upgraded mine to 0650 but this is from observation rather than actual knowledge...

1) altimeter (like MMI) - Possibly but would be drawn from the map DVD
2) no 400 files limit on SD cards - Definitley still there & I believe it is 512, files, folders etc. so individual items on the card
3) more sound settings (bass, highs, middle) - Didn't notice but we have Bose so maybe different for others ?
4) navi announcement from both speaker (left/right) - ditto didn't notice will try to listen when using !
5) title scrolling in the DIS - definitley not, besides would crash reading it !

1) There is an altimeter with SW0650 - but it's not from the map, it's from the GPS data. Once GPS is receiving 4 o or more satellites it gives a full 3D location (latitude, longitude and altitude).

2) There never was a 400 file limit on the RNS-E - it's always been 512 files and folders in total. The 400 figure is an "urban myth".

3) Not true, still only bass and treble with both standard and Bose.

4) This is not related to SW0650, earlier SW versions have behaved the same. It depends on the value in adaptation channel 136 - 0 = both speakers, 5 = left speaker only, 13 = right speaker only.

5) EU versions of the RNS-E never have and still don't scroll titles in the DIS.

Hi Dave, is this definitley 0 to make the Nav come out of both speakers as when I tried 0 it just came out of the left speaker or is there something to change elsewhere too ?

Yes, definitely 0 - but you might have to reboot the RNS-E (press and hold RADIO and SETUP).

Thanks Dave, tried again & rebooted but still only sound out of the left speaker (it looks like it hasn't taken the value but when go back in displays 0) so set it back to 13. Will try again some time, but hardly a problem !

I think I remember reading somewhere that someone thought it might be a one-way change, i.e. once you've made it non-zero even changing it back to zero doesn't restore the voice instructions to both speakers. Looks like they might have thought right...

That is looking possible - I think the RNS-E was shipped coded like this as when I bought the car was still on 2006 Firmware.
