Cheepo Exhaust Mod for Xmas....

Post by pegbox7 » Tue Dec 01, 2009 12:11 am

Just whilst money is tight and i had a bit of time i decided to see if i could modify the rear boxes on a totally standard system just to give a bit of noise as my standard system was super silent.

I unbolted the system from the KATS back, or should i say had to cut the rotted bolts that hold the sleeves and then it just popped off. Its really heavy and the silencer boxes are HUGE ! I started on the one closest to the kats first and opened it up like a tin by peeling the top side back. in this box was a straight through pipe and a y piece. i totally cut off the box and removed the little joing y piece and left this as a straight through section with no silencer - Job done very easy.

I then moved onto the huge rear box and did the same, slicing open the top section and peeled it away, this was a bit more difficult as its spot welded to a plate/baffel inside but nothing a hammer couldn't rectify. i pulled out wadds of stuffing( Wearing gloves and desposing of this correctly) Once it was totally empty i stitched it back together. I bought 2 x new sleves from a local exhaust place at £1.75 each and it all slid together with ease and fitted straight on the hangers - well thats no surprise as its an OEM system.

Moment of truth as i fired it up and to my surprise/delight it sounded great not too loud and more importantly not like a naff exhaust with no silencers. It now sounds awesome from outside and doesn't boom at all on the motorway, it looks like a stock system but doesn't sound like one.

If i had the money i would definitely buy a Miltek or similar but for now it was a cheap mod that actually has been the most satisfying pound for pound mod that i have ever done....

THE END.... :D

It was a popular TVR Chimaera/Griffith mod too. Slice open the rear boxes, rip out the wadding, zip it all up again. So what if it's not got chrome tips?

Good stuff. Just like gutting precats isn't it?

That sounds like a really bad idea. Instead of the gases having a direction to flow they will now have all sorts of turbulence one would expect. On motorcross racing four stroke engines you can lose 5 to 10% when the packing gets worn for this very reason. If you keep them wrapped tight the gases come straight out. I expect the outside of the silencers get a lot hotter now as well. Be worth asking the experts if this can do any harm.
