steering winding

i have had winding noise coming from my steering wheel when i lock it left or right. Tried steering fluid problem still there. Any other suggestions? Thanks

What tyres?? When i went from 255 to 275, i noticed a noise on full lock but was always when car was cold & is due to the extra width of the 275's Car almost feels like the front wheels are being dragged across the tarmac. Very odd & was a worry until i realised it's normal.

yeh i have 255/35/19. But i dnt personaly think its the tyres. Bcuz problem has just started now.

There two different causes here from my experience:

1) When you have the steering at full-lock either way, you'll get a higher pitched whining noise. This is common to most power steering mechanisms. It's just the belts and motor working over-time - nothing to worry about. You'll get this whether the car is stationary (i.e. just move to full lock when stationary) or moving slowly.

2) There's another noise you'll get when driving the car very slowly using full locks (e.g. in a car park or coming off your driveway). This apparently is due to the multilink suspension. When on full lock, the wheels will appear to tilt to one side. It does this to make the turning circle smaller. You'll get a slight juddering noise as effectly the wheels are being dragged rather than driven across the surface. Again this is normal and I've driven BMWs and Mercs with the same system and they do the same thing.

However, I've recently had my tracking done (and front shocks fitted under the 5-year warranty) and the noise from 2) above is reduced. So in summary, I'd suggest:

1) try your tracking, and
2) make sure you don't have a DRC issue at the front.

BTW - I was told that to properly track the car there needs to be a full tank of fuel in it. Not sure why but that came from Audi UK Technical. So if you want it to National Tyres or where-ever, make sure it's fuelled up.
