RS4 B5 - are they really that quick?

Post by juice » Sun Sep 13, 2009 5:22 pm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bit of a Biased question really if im posting in this section

but im on the hunt for one at the minute and there is one that im interested in at 470ish hp with near enough the same torque

My question is, are they really that quick as people make out, ive owned some fast japanese cars
ie:
2006 model - Subaru STI running near 375hp with 400 torque (weighed near 1500kg)
2005 model - Mitsi Evo 8 MR - running near 370hp with 380 torque (weighed near 1500kg)
also had a 2000 model CLK55 AMG for a short while but my wallet didnt like that car at all (weighed ALOT)

i know i cant compare the RS in terms of handling or maybe i can? the thing is i dont know. maybe you guys can share your views as you've probably owned other fast cars before owning the RS and how does it compare?

I want to know what these cars are like for spirited driving as thats whats drawing my attention to it. obviously a stock RS isnt that slow but im guessing a 470hp one isnt going to stick around either.

your views/comments/opinions are welcome.

Ps:how much does an RS weigh?

RS4 weights around 1600 kg.

470 hp one should be really fast if the figures are for real. REALLY fast.

In mine I only have a remap, it showed only 398hp at a dyno and it is still faster than e92 M3, tuned B7 RS4 and much faster than my previous '00 Impreza GT that had around 290hp.

I am sure you will be satisfied. Try to find one somewhere close and have a ride in it, you will love it.

Quicker than any of my other cars - NISSAN GTI-R, EVO VII RS SPRINT (330 / 330 low geared and V LIGHT), TVR Cerbera 4.5.

I think RS's are actually a smidgen over 1700kg...

Says it all really.
This was my first really fast car, having had a B6 S4 previously (standard). Knew what 344bhp was like. The standard RS4 is quicker by some margin with the added benefit of turbos.

Add into the mix seriously easy mods, and you've got almost 100bhp more.

I can't wait to try her out against some exotica and pi55 em off.

As mentioned, get a go in a modded one.

My mate was used to fast superbikes and has a Caterham so thought he knew what speed and acceleration was like. He almost sh4t himself when he came out in mine for the first time, on a private road...

Well my RS only has an SKN remap and milltek catback at the moment.. 430ish bhp, i've had a good rolling race from 60mph with a yamaha r6 upto 140ish.. i was stuck to his arse and the front of his bike was lifting a little under acceleration(means he was giving it some)... it takes some serious machinery to keep up with a well ridden 600cc... once i've finished throwing my hard earned cash at mine and lightened it a bit (dry weight for an rs is 1620 kg... 80kg more than a 996 turbo), i'll be playing with litre bikes

As for cars, m3 drivers don't bother much when they see the lorry sized movit brakes on the rs at the traffic lights, i've only had one proper go with a tvr t350c, pulled a few car lengths on it when we reached 3 figure speeds and my car is due a cambelt service.. so it could've been healthier.

Theres not much out there faster than an rs, especially ones that have been taken beyond 450bhp or even further using bigger turbos and everything else that goes with it.
Have a look at youtube videos of RS4's and S4's running gt28rs turbos, they get around the speedo at almost the same rate as the tachometer does... the acceleration is brutal in any gear!!

My S4 is running just over 400bhp and I've had a play with a modified Subaru STI 2006 at some ludicrous speeds. Mine was marginally faster, so I would expect a 470bhp RS4 to be much quicker.

How are you going to lighten it?
Presume the only things to do are to change to lighter wheels, and swap the front seats for Poles, but other than late...?

What'll that save, maybe 5kgs a corner + maybe 20kgs per seat? 60kgs total? An average sized gal... Will that make a massive difference?

and they handle incredibly well too. Not much keeps up with an RS4 on the track.

I think with stock suspension the handling is criticised for having significant understeer and instability.

However handling is dramatically improved with uprated anti-roll bars and PSS9 or KW 3 suspension. Balance now becomes perfect and with dampers set to a firmer setting handling is great.

Add your 460-470 hp which is easily attained with a simple remap and full exhaust mod and then a set of Brembo 6/8 piston calipers or the like and you have a real weapon on the track with the luxury and comfort of what Audi offers. Notwithstanding the convenience of the avant.

This. The torque really scares people, it is a ridiculously fast car.

Oh mate, i'm going alot further than that
The rs4 was really bought as a project car, it lives in the garage shined up like a lollipop and only ventures out on dry days.
I'm not really interested in creature comforts or fancy trim in a performance car.

Apart from fitting pole positions a carbon bonnet and whatever other parts i can budget for.. i'll have the aircon ditched, half cage and the interior stripped down to make it a more puposeful machine, it'll look much like a track car inside.
Battery moved to the boot, all un-needed plastics/sound proofing removed.. no rear seats... that lot will take the weight down into m3 csl territory quite easily.. maybe even less(b5 dtm or btcc car, what do they weigh?)

Add some serious suspension/arbs.. swap the bimotos with some v/light bbs's, give the lump a pair of gt28rs's.. straight custom exhaust, big injectors, fmic, decent clutch along with all the rest depending on what it will produce (i'll leave it to mrc most likely)

I know this sounds a bit extreme to the average RS owner on here, but i don't use it as an everyday car and i suppose its reversible if needs be.
Everyone knows weight is what kills performance, handling and braking... thats why i'm going down this route along with big turbo bhp for good measure 8)

Aye, so there is a lot you can do to lighten an RS... if you really want to lighten it :)

Trick is as you've stated, most people use this as an everyday car not a track only toy...

Good luck, sounds brilliant, and hope I to see it one day whizzing past !!
