another newbie!!

Post by taz2212 » Sun Sep 06, 2009 7:47 pm

Hello everyone
well i am looking to take the plunge i have been looking for about a year for an rs6 however i must admit that the drc problems concern me especially having absolutely no technical experience and not an abundance of cash flow. the financial controller (missus) seems to be on my side but i know large repair bills early on might tip her over the edge, all thoughts appreciated.
also any other hints and things to look out for, is it best to get the car checked out by a professional .
hope to get lots of help

Hi there and welcome to the forum!
I'm sure everyone will be along shortly to offer their advice etc.
A warranty is pretty much essential, and one from a reputable company etc ie AUDI! I fell into the trap of buying a decent car that had the suspension fail shortly after purchase. The warranty I had (WAS) isn't worth the paper it's written on, and short of threatening to take the dealer to court, I would have had to pay for the DRC to be replaced myself. A gearbox service is also recommended, as if thsi fails, they're VERY expensive to replace.
What's your budget? There are often decent cars for sale on here, in case you've not looked in the classified section ;)

you've been looking for a year !??!?! where have you been looking, in your local paper ?? (only joking mate)

whats your budget

buy one with an Audi warranty and you have NO worries, but beware, they cost a fair bit to renew, as im about to find out, though you should get some of that back on resale if you sell within the year

or just get a car with h&r suspension and no engine mods , most problems seem to come with tuned cars , loads of service history , and you should be fine

If you are worried about the DRC then you have 2 easy options. Buy a car with an Audi warranty or buy one that has already had the DRC removed, both are available.

As for gearboxes mine was completely stock when it went, so just make sure the gearbox is covered.

Good hunting!

£19k !!!

you'll get one with an Audi warranty for that no problem

as you say, you'll prob get one from Audi for that price and yes it'll come with 1yr warranty worth £1.7k

but Audi will have paid £12k for the car and put a huge margin on it

seems low mileage avants are somehow justified asking £20+k nowadays, not sure whats theyr going for...but on these cars, nothing wrong with 60k+ if they've been looked after properly (mines on 90k and runs a dream)

so better off buying one from an avid enthusiast

as phil said, if you buy a really good one with no DRC, then as long as you either put money aside each month or are willing to take a hit no and then you should be ok, but bear in mind IF the gearbox goes it will cost a good few k

moral of the story, if you really want peace of mind, buy one with an Audi warranty = easily below £19k
if your open minded, buy one with no DRC from an enthusiast who has looked after the car properly

standard advice really ?

I have just driven to Norfolk and back to go to a garden party at the outlaws. I was going to drink but enjoyed the drive that much on the way there that I stayed off the ale to enjoy the return leg! These cars really have that much appeal by just driving them!!!
Mine is a 53 plate avant and has covered 51K it is immaculate , has PSS9 suspension and a full history. It has always had whatever it needs and is chipped to about 500bhp, so far it has never missed a beat and never fails to thrill me.
I think the issues previously mentioned hugely depend on how many miles you are intending on doing, I do hardly any and dont need the car as a daily runner so never seem to see any issues.
I would say that if you are intending on doing quite a few miles then buy a DRC removed example with as low mileage as possible.

TBH I disagree with "modded" cars have the most issues comment Phil.
Modded cars are fine as long as "biggerfasterlouder tuning Co Of round the back of the bike shed" hasn't done it. I have spent a bit on mine as you know, but actual failures are in three years of ownership;

DRC 4 times (all when stock)
Gearbox (when stock)
N75 (very unstock)
Mafs (very unstock)
Nearside front bush (not stock)

I don't think that is bad considering I drive it like my balls are on fire......

What is draining the slush fund is the fuel..... 40k miles in 3 years average £90 per tank, average a generous 300 miles per tank........

BUT I DONT GIVE A FECK- When tis gone tis gone; no point being the richest man in the graveyard.....

Mine had brand new DRC when I bought it, and it was brilliant, until less than 2 months/1000miles later when it failed! Now have H&Rs, which are great, and worry free. Plenty of DRC free cars out there, or budget for coilovers when buying.

Other problems on mine have been zero, car has always run faultlessly (above DRC withstanding).
Only costs have been tyres, brakes, servicing, which it's appetite for is only surpassed by it's massive thirst for super unleaded. That said I still take great pleasure in pushing the right pedal, and using it up as quickly as possible.
Not cheap to run, but if you are looking, you must know that, just take the plunge and enjoy, I'm sure you won't regret.

I`ve actually been surprised by the fuel efficiency this last week or so. Not sure whether its becuse the air temps are starting to cool but seeing a regular 21 average on long journeys, before it was 18 max!!
Still dont really give a <beep> what its doing though, it does what it does!!

Buying an RS6 and then worrying about the fuel consumption is a bit like buying a boat and worrying about getting it wet.

I'd quite like to buy the A2 actually, firstly I'd feck off all the speed cameras, and get rid of the dopey 50 mph speed limit that causes all the jams. Then I'd move it to the middle of bodmin moor and rename it "up yours Boris your a big a liar as Ken was pass". But seein as you have already bought it you probably have your own plans.
