Overactive Fans

Post by SpeedSix » Thu Aug 13, 2009 10:11 am

Morning guys

I have noticed my fans have become a little over-active just lately and sometimes will run on after turning the engine off for 30 seconds or so. Ive done a search but couldn't really get a straight answer what to do next?

- Water temp never moves from the centre
- Oil temp sits around the 90 degree mark
- I have plenty of water in the car
- I have made sure the aircon has not been on
- The fans will sometimes run on even after short journeys
- No faults found on VAGCOM
- No faults or warnings on the dash
- The cam belt was changed about 10k ago but Im not sure if the waterpump/thermostat were replaced
- I have had a few bits done recently under the car, could I have trapped/disturbed anything?

Can anyone help? I know temps have been quite warm recently, are the fans acting normally? Am I being paranoid?

Thanks in advance everyone

Stu :P

Interestingly, I have the opposite concern - my fan never runs on but I do wonder whether it should as there is some serious heat coming out from under that bonnet!!!! Ive seen turbo timer products available. Wondered if the car has one fitted as standard and mine doesnt work?

sounds normal to me , they do put out a lot of heat in that crowded engine bay , my fan will often run for a little while to calm it all down !

Right, well the fans are running constantly and when plugged into VAGCOM Im getting no codes! BUT the temp is showing 106 degrees+ (Even tho the dash is showing 90) and even with both fans running its not getting any colder!!!

Im guessing its the thermostat! Do people agree???

Cheers

The dash display is the oil temperature. The 106 must be your coolant temp, which sounds a bit high. What does the water temp guage on the dash display?

Could be thermostat. On any other car, I'd just change the thermostat to see, but on the RS6 that involves changing the timing belt. Are you due for one soon?

The dash display I'm reading is water temp which is sat in the middle at 90 degrees constantly. Its the VAGCOM that is reading 106 degrees which seems to be the true temp that the ECU is getting.

Yep, I know its a pretty big job and Im not even due for a belt but Im convinced its the stat now!

106 degress seems a bit too high in general (please correct me if I am wrong). My RS6 is always at around 96-98 even under under 100+ ambient temp and traffic jam.

Yeah I agree, especially seeing as though the car is at idle with the bonnet open and the two rad fans at full chat..........even then the temp is rising. I turned off at 106 but Im sure it would have carried on up!

Mine is similar, fans come on quite a bit with the car running then sometimes over runs after engine stop. My oil temp moves about between 90 and 105 ish and the water temp is permenantly glued to 90. I think its perfectly normal

The dash reading is pegged at 90 to make it look 'normal' to prevent too much customer worry. Thermostat is the most common problem but not too far off the norm in this case.

My fans are coming on as soon as I drive off, and once I've stopped they run on for 5-10 mins, the temp gauge does'nt move past 90.
I have put the car on VAG-COM and the fault I'm getting is-16502 ECT (G62) signal too high P0118-002 lower limit exceeded intermitent.
Anybody know where the G62 sensor is located?

Thanks in advance.

I know my temps arent getting too high but Im sure they would if I let it just sit there. If the bonnet is up and both fans are spinning then my temps should be going lower not rising. The fans should be clicking in and out as it hits the temp thresholds!

That's the coolant temp sensor. It looks like it's broken which would explain the fan problem. Unfortunately, I believe the timing belt has to come off to change it. I'm hope I'm wrong about this.

Looks like I was wrong. I think the sensor is accessible based on this diagram:
