Curious that the new V8 engines are all 32v. This is only my view of what could be the cause and maybe completely wrong, comments welcome.

are you sure? I thought the RS6engine was also 40v heads??????

B7 RS4 is 32 because its got direct injection and as R8 etc.

What's the normal service interval for changing the timing chains, and how much does it cost?

From other threads on this site, I believe the chains need servicing around 100,000 miles. Don't think it necessarily means a new chain, but guides and tensioners are well worth doing at this interval.

I don't know how much this would cost, quite a lot I should think, as it is an engine out job by the look of it.

I would probably budget £1,500 as a minimum at an independent specialist, and more if you want a main Audi Stealer to do it. Bt I am sure that someone out there has got a proper figure.

I think the newer engines has 32 valves because these are direct injection and therefore the injector takes the space the 5th valve would have used...
somethin' like that anyway:)

according to Grizz around 100,ooo miles and its an engine out jobbie as you can see in the above photo

I have been thinking..... dangerous game but well.... ;)

My S4 is nearing 80K on the clock and has the tensioner rattle on startup, although frequent oil changes seem to keep it pretty unnoticable. However as I intend on keeping the car for a few years is it worth having the tensioner and guides done at 100K?... thoughts welcome. thanks :)

Get the tensioner and guides done when the noise stays even after start up. I had a long chat with Doug at MRC about this as mine's just been in for a clutch and so half the labour to pull the engine out was already done.
IIRC he said that the start up noise is not unusual, it's when it continues to make the noise then you are looking at tensioner failure, and then you're looking at anything up to £1500 in parts (depending on which bits need replacing).

thanks for the reply yeah I will do that, I dont suppose thats too excessive in terms of parts, its the 20 hours labour involved thats possibly more worrying!!!! However the car is covered by extended warranty, I cant see how, as this is supposed to be a serviceless system, that such a failure would not be covered...Knowing any warranty policy thought they would probably find a loophole!!!
