That sounds quite quick, has it been modified?

When people talk of 50-70 speeds etc.. are they measured by cruising at 50mph and then flooring it, or by simply accelerating from a lower speed and measuring the time it takes between the two speeds?

Accelerating from a lower speed. So in your example, start accelerating at say 35 or 40, press the stopwatch as you get to 50 and then 70. I know it's not totally accurate, but if you do a wider range eg 30 to 100, any inaccuracies are not that significant, but enough to distinguish a modified car against a standard and to pick up any significant power loss. At the end of the day, it's at least as good a "real life" measure as a rolling road, because who cares if a rolling road says you have xbhp if that is not reflected in real life acceleration.

out of interest, how would I check my 50-75mph time in 4th say to compare against my saab, because when i put it in 4th, it just cogs it down to 3rd / 2nd. How do I keep it in 4th?

Simple - put it in 4th gear in manual mode and floor the throttle without pressing the kick-down switch. It will only kick down if you press the switch, you will still get full throttle though.

I was playing with the vagcom and when I pushed the accelerator pedal all the way down without activating the kickdown switch, I got a reading of about 75% on the acclerator pedal position value. When I pushed it all the way it went up to 85%.

As you can imagine, I was excited about the accelerator pedal not regestering 100% when pushed fully down (I always used to check for this on my cable accelerator cars - you'd be amazed how many cars don't achieve full throttle) but when I logged it on a run, it was showing 100% with a throttle valve angle of 100% also. Odd.
