When trying the different shift modes in my S4, it seems that the throttle response in S mode seems much quicker than when using the paddle shifters. Is this the case or is it just that S mode is more aggressive when changing down?

Mine's the same is 'S' if I use the paddles or not??

Normal tip mode will automatically change up at 6500rpm, also throttle response is as per auto mode(ie quite soft). S mode lets you rev to the 7k redline, throttle response is much much sharper, when you override with the paddles in S they stay in override mode for much longer letting you change down early giving a nice bit of engine braking.

You can override the gear selection when in S using the paddles??? I didn't know that!! Does it work in D too?

It does indeed, when in S it transforms the car on the twisties, no more unwanted kickdown in the middle of a bend!

When in D you can override with paddles which is great for a quick overtake but the override only lasts for about 10secs and it returns to auto.

Hmmm.
I wouldn't say it was override. Yes it changes gear when you flip thepaddle but if you then don't touch the paddles it goes back to sport. I'm looking at getting my gearbox remapped (if the supplier ever gets back to me) which I believe will not only speed up the change itself but also pretty much make it manual change when in 'S' mode. I get the impression you can red line it and it still won't change until you flip the paddle. Same applies when changing down giving the full use of the engine breaking. I could be wrong.....

It does seem odd that the tiptronic mode does not use the sport settings, or that they didn't just give you the choice of Tip or D, then a sport button which toggles the higher rev limit and sharper throttle response.

Does it explain all this stuff in the manual somewhere? I can't really find much about it on the internet.

Yes you are right, but it takes much longer to revert back to sport mode.

Was looking at getting the gearbox map done myself, would like to try one thats been done already though.

Maybe woth talking to Minhea @ MRC and see if we can get a few of us up there?? I have been told though it's not worth doing the gearbox unless you have the remap and Milltek to go with it. £1500.00ish.
