Gearbox question
Gearbox question
Hi all,
What are the symtoms of a gearbox problem on a 2002 rs6 with 65,000 on the clock?
I cold be wrong, but it seems that when it's cold, the revs in top gear are higher than normal for a given speed for the 1st minute or so, eg normaly 60=2000, but more like 60=2600 for the first minute or so, after that smooth and very very positive selection.
Not sure i really want to hear the answer to this...lol
Paul.

RE: Gearbox question
I've never had gearbox problems, but that would sound like the lock-up clutches slipping. From what I've seen, the recommended course of action would be to change the ATF and strainer and hope the problem goes away...
From what I've seen, other symptoms include getting a whallop in the back when changing gear under load.
Whining generally means low ATF level (on most autoboxes).

I don't know enough about it. Perhaps someone else could give you a better answer. I'll be changing the ATF and filter in my box soon as a precautionary measure. Perhaps you should do the same?

RE: Thanks
I would change the fluid and see how it goes (unless this has been done recently?), but make sure it is done correctly (up to temp, checked with VCDS etc). Take to someone who knows how to work on the RS6
When my gearbox went (usual slip and BANG followed by limp mode and then no torque to road) first thing Audi did was replace the fluid - like that was going to make a difference when it wouldn't go anywhere. Audi seems to think that this is a lifetime fluid - I had burnt ATF fluid at 37,000 miles and will be replacing mine every 20k.
Hope this helps.

Re: Gearbox question
Wouldn't this be the lock-up clutches not locking up? But might this be normal behaviour - maybe the computer is deliberately not locking the box until it's up to temperature?raceman wrote: I cold be wrong, but it seems that when it's cold, the revs in top gear are higher than normal for a given speed for the 1st minute or so, eg normaly 60=2000, but more like 60=2600 for the first minute or so, after that smooth and very very positive selection.
I've never experienced these symptoms (or never noticed them at least) but then I can't really get above 30 without getting out of town, at which point everything is well up to temperature. I'll try and check next time I start from cold in the country (don't hold your breath).

Re: RE: Thanks
I took mine in to have coilovers fitted and for a full service. i had experienceed the symptoms described above a couple of times so asked for the gearbox fluid to be changed. Unfortunately the guy that did it did not have a clue how to fill the fluid up properly and let me take it 100miles home with only half the fluid needed. This caused all the friction components of the box to overheat severely and burn out. it is now back at the garage who have sent the box away for a possible re-furb.GardinerG wrote:I would change the fluid and see how it goes (unless this has been done recently?), but make sure it is done correctly (up to temp, checked with VCDS etc). Before i sent it back to him i had audi look at it to give me an independent assessment. they told me the box would need replacing and quoted me £5350!!
I strongly recommend you get the box checked by someone who knows what they are doing, i.e Audi or one of the specialists you find on here. It will be worth it in the long run. I have read that a proper ATF change can cure mild syptoms like you describe, like i had hoped to do myself. so good luck!
