RE: Snow handling
do you keep normal tyre pressures , ie 38/39ish , or drop a bit of air out , before venturing on the snow ?

RE: Snow handling
Lower pressures will help, but as the other thread said, quattro is good for getting moving, but bad for stopping....
I have the luxury of a 20 year old Fiat Panda 4x4 to use as a station car and yesterday it utterly defied the laws of gravity. Fixed 4WD (ie, no centre diff to jab around), 4 deep-treaded snow tyres and 750kg make an awesome combination. Did 60 miles in up to a foot of the white stuff yesterday without so much as a hiccup. Very glad the RS6 was safely in the drive....
And this pic was taken whilst on a 1-in-7 climb up to the top of the North Downs in Surrey. Kids coming down towards me on sledges, as no other cars could get up there (passed very stuck S3 at the bottom, but unable to offer help as Panda not up for towing).

I had a damn weird episode today.. I went to pull away out of a street that was still quite icy and gave slightly too many beans - the car didn't go forwards but just started turning sideways on its own axis. With cars either side I bloody panicked and just froze until the car stopped. Somehow, I had rotated literally on the spot about 60 or 70 degrees! It was well weird..

You boys and your virgin snow antics!
Up in Scotland I have had a fair amount of driving on snow. I was also in the Alpes last year, to go skiing. It's great fun! Drive into an empty carpark with a foot of snow and spin until your heart's content.
If the snow gets very bad I also have aset of 'Sport's Spiders':

To be honnest I have never had them on, other than as practice. They are what you need if you need to stop!
