Gearbox Question

Guys,

What is the concensus with the gearbox? I know Grizz is looking at the manual option but I like the auto with this car. Has the only answer been to replace the entire gearbox and if you are buying a 2nd hand one then how can you know it is knackered? Can't the current one be taken out and parts upgraded or fixed?

I know we have done polls on DRC but can I get some feeback from who has experienced "slipping" when the oil is cold, who gets the thunk when in D on kickdown, who has had a total failure or at least all the lights S,D,1,2,3,4,5 come on and you are left with no gear.

Then of course what was done to resolve the problem or are people just living with the isssues?

Would be nice to get this discussion going before people rip out the auto and try to stick in the manual.

I've now had this 3 or 4 times - what causes that to happen? It either fixes itself or is fine after a restart.

The box can be fixed . I've got a local specialist who will do it with a 12month warranty .they cost £1900+ vat. That's a full rebuild Not a bodge cock up.

I now carry a full gear box service pack in stock , seals & filters with a special Borg Warner additive to help reduce heat build up .

ANyone fitted a remote gearbox oil cooler?

They have a oil cooler along the bottom of the the radiator .The + has some extra cooling .

oh ok, does it get a decent airflow?

Yes , look at the lower grill on your bumper. It's just behind it so it should get good air flow.

Hi, have had a total slipping failure when you cant go over 2k revs with any sort of boost, bannging etc but never had the lights on. Had i lovely cheap quote from Audi for just £8,800 but decided to go with a local firm for £2500 + vat after WARRENTY DIRECT had me jumping through hoops then decided not to pay anything at all. I now use the policy for emergency toilet paper which is proberbly still more than its worth!. Now its as good as new but still keeping everything crossed!. I also have a spare gearbox that i bought off Grizz if anyones interested or fancies a spare??. Check your policy if you have a crappy worthless WARENTY DIRECT policy or ring them as they told me the car had to be inspected and have previous extended Audi warrenty etc etc etc, non of which was mentioned when i was sold the policy

Robbing dogs!!! i know you don't want to hear this steve, but reinforces the Audi warranty being better value for money, OK it costs extra, but I've never had to ask twice for an issue to be resolved, big and small... and have always made a profit in the last two years when paid for warranty. Glad your cars ok now.
