Avant or Saloon?

Post by blueaudi » Wed Apr 30, 2008 3:20 pm

Just idling away an afternoon wondering which is the better ownership proposition in terms of retained value. I know some people on here have stated that traders prefer the saloon, but I've yet to meet one, especially from outside the network. Is that simply a case of people defending their choice, or have I been speaking to the wrong people?

Avant for me, however I think dependent on how you structure the conversation will depend on the answer you get.

There are more UK saloons than Avants IIRC.

I (personally) would say saloon and I can only qualify it through my own preference. If I needed an estate car I would not buy an rs4 avant purely because it is a special car and I would feel a bit prickly having everything chucked in the back, kids etc etc. I would sooner save my money and get a decent deisel estate that has better rear leg room then maybe have a small fun car for the weekend.

Avant - more practical and it just looks better! (IMO obviously).

I believe Avants are also faster.

There is a school of thought that says Avants are regarded as fast get away cars that can carry lots of stolen goods and are therefore more likely to be stolen than the saloon.

We have an estate 330D BMW tourer as our second car, so buying the Avant would be a waste of money. I don't think the Avant is worth the extra money, but I do think it looks better than the saloon.

In your dreams....... lol :jump:

Saloon for me, but if the RS5 was out I would have gone for that as I don't need a big car, as the 2nd car in family deals with any load lugging jobs
Current car..... hmmmmm????

it depends on whether you're happy with the slower saloon version. personally i wanted the extra performance of an avant.

The avant was the original RS model, and I beleive that the RS should still be the avant.....saloon just doesnt look right or part of the pedigree!
Saloons were created and so were the cabriolets, as it was more profitable for audi. I have been told that the Avant handles better, I dont see any changes in performance though. Avant hands down.

Yeah if your a funeral director.
Most Avant drivers will be 45 plus, fat, bald have ugly wives and get out of breath when they get up for a slash.
Saloon drivers are getting that way they just havnt quite given up on life yet.
cab drivers just wish they had a proper RS. :D

Avants maybe loads quicker but the saloon looks more subtle...IMO.... :D

I went for the saloon as I did not need the extra space at the time. Have done Avants before as I needed the space. Horses for courses I suppose but I do believe the Avant commands a premium.
