Right i had my first service at 16500miles...... when i picked up the car is was 9800miles, then after 500miles of driving it went down to 7600miles and now on 17,300miles and its showing 6300miles until service...... the dealers say it should go back up to 16,000miles. It seems to me you don't do many miles.
My understanding is that the AVS service interval is triggered by mileage OR time. Perhaps you car has worked out that when the time interval has elapsed, that will be roughly your mileage.
Try driving to Switzerland at the weekend, and see if it starts going up

Could be that....... i will wait and see what happens but so far ive only done about 1000miles and its dropped by around 3000miles until service on the DIS surely its still working it all out.......
Well thats how is supposed to work, AVS! innit

I think you just need to see what happens. I am sure that the AVS cycle has a maximum milage or elapsed time between intervals. I have a hunch that what you are seeing is the result of a predicted service due to time elapsed. If you have VAG-COM, I believe you can see the figures in one of the control blocks on the instrument cluster

Riz,

I have just checked my service book (S4), and it says that on the Long Life Schedule the maximum time elapsed is 24 months due to age related degradation of the engine oil.

It is over 2 months since you had your car serviced, and you travelled about 1000 miles. If you wanted it to ever read 16000 miles to your next service, then that would take nearly 3 years at your present rate - thus the time will elapse prior to you achieving a big mileage.

Ahhhh fair point.... so the 24months time limit must somehow tie in with the AVS mileage...... its all clear now... to computer has worked out on my current driving style i cannot do more than 6300miles within the next 24months unless i change my driving style..... or something along those lines

24months divdeded by 9800miles = 408miles per month.
