Advice on shiny mirrors needed

Post by herbie » Mon Apr 21, 2008 11:45 am

Hi All,

I need some advice on mirror fitting on my 1998 B5 S4 and Im sure the expert is on this forum somewhere :o).

Somebody recently hit one of my colour coded plastic mirrors in a car park and cracked it (no note or anything). Anyway I quite fancied the 'bling' metal mirrors and managed to find some on ebay. The guy said they came off a 98 S4.

As it was sunny at the weekend I thought id have a go at fitting them but having taken the old mirror housing off and comparing it with the new metal cover there are some subtle differences. The screw holes that hold the internal mirror gubbins to the cover are placed differently and also the black plastic panel at the bottom is a slightly different shape (more angled at the external end, the metal one looks squarer) and lastly the glass is a slightly different shape.

So it seems i have the wrong mirrors, maybe the metal ones are from the newer facelift ? At this point should i go looking for the internal bits (motors and such) from a newer audi A4 so i can use the metal covers, if so what am i looking for ?. Or should i give up and put them back on ebay ?

Cheers
herbie

If they are facelift (sounds like it), then yes, you're best off getting a pair of complete facelift mirror units and swap the covers over.

Guess it depends really on how much you are prepared to pay for the extra bling, as the genuine metal mirrors don't go cheap! What did you pay for the covers?

Thanks for your reply. Im happy to spend a bit more money on them as i 'think' i got a good deal on them, my alternative is buying a replacement colour coded mirror from audi or those plastic covers from Germany. Ive been scanning ebay for a while and they were all going for 200 +. I got them for under a 100 quid. They are the shiny chrome ones rather than the brushed aloy ones.. in reasonable condition.

So im looking for mirrors from a 1999 ish facelift B5 at a scrappy ?

Cheers

Hi Herbie, if you want confirmation of what you have, post the Audi part numbers.

That's a very good price!

Hopefully you should be able to pick something up fairly reasonably from a scrapyard. Let us know how you get on.

Hi,

The part numbers etched on the inside of the mirrors I bought are :

Passenger : 50/2/15 14/01/02
Driver: 50/2/15 13/02/02

Are these facelift mirrors ? What age A4 should i be looking for mirror insides from ?

Cheers for help
Paul.

Whilst we're on shiny miirors, one of mine has just picked up a couple of scratches.

Is it ok to use a metal polish or do they have a laquer type finish? What's the best way to remove scratches on these?

If they're Aluminium Matt, you can't use polish to remove scratches.

That spot'll just become shiny.
