what happens to the rs6 gearbox?

Post by mattysupra » Tue Nov 27, 2007 7:00 pm

what does happen to the box when it goes wrong? Does it spit gears all over the road, poor oil out ? And is there any tell tail signs of when its going to go wrong?

first sign is hunting between gears and then harsher shifting. failure mode seems to usually entail "emergency mode" i.e. limp mode fully mechanical operation in 4th gear.

good 1st step is to replace fluids completely to flush the gearbox. zf believes (wrongly) that the gearbox is a "lifetime fill"

when you say hunting do you mean like going to change gear and then changing its mind? like im pressing the throttle up and down slightly but im not?

On both my failures, the fault was most evident at pull off, so i'd apply throttle but no traction, although the revs were rising (slipping), then all of a sudden at say 3500RPM the gear would engage & i'd get smacked on the back by a rather unhealthy launch. This happend more often until the box went into limp mode (1st time i was on my way to the dealers went it went into limp mode).

I'd say the tell tale sign is the box/clutch starting to slip.

basically either a internal brake/clutch slipping or the torque converter/clutch slipping.

nothing in particular. if you look on the zf site you will find a parts manual and the specifications for fluids. etka also provides parts numbers from audi. if you hunt around various audi-related sites you will find people who have re-conned the zf hp24a box. not on this site as most rs6 owners are not diy'ers. try the audiworld a8 (d2) site as a couple of the guys there have a lot of btdt on the hp24a.

it is the realm of the skilled diy'er with the proviso that removing the tranny would be a royal pitb with the rs6...

I guess I'm going blind in my old age. Where is this for the 5HP24A (for the '6?)? Please!

gearbox slippage

Post by shrapnel » Wed Dec 05, 2007 1:25 pm

I am a new member but have had my RS6 Saloon in Daytona Grey since April, bought from a dealer

This has just happened to mine. Exactly as described in an earlier posting entitled "weird gearbox problem"- slippage under hard acceleration initially then the problem got worse so that even slight acceleration meant slippage. The wallop as the gear went home is also a symptom. It also was hunting around for the right gear. Never to got to limp home mode though. It certainly didn't spit oil and parts all over the road - it is a fully sealed unit that comes 'as is' from ZF. Audi don't open them up apparently.

It is under warranty and the gearbox is being replaced by Victoria Audi as I write this. Initially they tried changing the gearbox oil (which they charged me £240 for) but it didn't make any difference.

dealers make me laugh, they say its a sealed unit and most don`t touch the oil, now they have changed the oil and charged you and of course the gearbox needs changing, i do hope they are going to give you your £240 back as the gearbox should of been changed 1st anyway

I'm getting more and more worried about my box. it has starting to not know which gear to go into. And sometimes a hard change with a bang. It dont slip high revs tho but a little a low revs. When it dont know which gear to go in, it is when I'm on about half throttle. it goes to change down but then it dont. it wont do this if i use the paddles. The box is crap. I have a supra that is 14 years old with a brilliant box that changes faster and never ever picks the wrong gear. It will even jump 2-3 gears in one go the milli second you hit the throttle. It is also the smoothest gear change i have ever come across. How can a 60 grand German car that is 4 years old not be half as good as a TOYOTA supra that is 14 years old costing 46 grand new?? The Rs6 should have 10 years experience on the supra. Also why cant i pull off in second gear? Why cant i be in 4th gear at 40 mph? CRAP CRAP CRAP. I can put my supra in 3rd gear and its in 3rd gear so it will pull of in 3rd gear . Simple. I have had the Rs6 for not long over a week now and im really disapointed. Even with the amd 520bhp upgrade!

as a number of people have stated, the box is a weak point. replace the oil at a specialist shop and see what difference that makes...

You can't?

Mine will change into 4th at 30mph and 5th at 40.
