That & other stuff.

The main thing is that the services of the company I work for are in major demand at the moment. We have more work than we can comfortably handle. We've filled up the labs with chemists and the work has poured in to fill the capacity as soon as it becomes available.

Until 6 months ago I'd been out of the lab for 7 years in an office role. They asked me if I'd like to earn time and a half for doing a few hours a week in the lab whenever there was space in a fume hood. I'm finally being paid for the overtime that I do anyway, so my response was "Hell, yeah!".

So I'm doing about 50 hours per week, much of which time I'm away from the PC. The rest of the time, I'm up to my eyeballs managing the development of our new wing - to make space for another 50-70 chemists in the other side of the building.

So, not really much time for anything else really. On the plus side though, some of the overtime I've been doing is now going back into the car in the shape of a remap 8) . The rest, unfortunately, was spent before I earned it.... :(

I've got a few problems with 'fuzzy/muffled' sound from the front speakers, so I came for a looksee to find out if anyone else has had the same problem. This TELEFON nonsense was getting on my nerves, so I thought I'd look into that as well.

Thing is, the forum is kind of addictive - I've stayed away because I knew I don't really have the time to get drawn into as many threads as I used to.

What year? Concert head unit?
PHONE, 2000MY facelift, SATNAV+
So, maybe this means that the programmers were finally educated in the Universal World Language some time in 1999 and that us poor sods with earlier models are stuck with cars that don't speak our native tongue?

How annoying! I might just have to get some Dymo tape and stick it over the display. Do Dymo make red on black tape?

Thanks for the explanation Al - good to have you back

However, I would have thought it a bit premature to make that conclusion on such limited data

The other explanation might be that the Satnav RNS-D based systems were 'properly' programmed.

The decision at IUPAC was that they get Sulfur their way if they accept our spellings for Aluminium (not Aluminum) and Caesium (not Cesium).

The US scientists are (mostly) complying with the deal, but I don't expect that the great American public will adopt the correct spellings any time soon.

Tempting, but replacing the Bose with another solution is a non-starter for me since I don't have the time to rip out all the 2 Ohm speakers and replace them with normal 4 or 8 Ohm units.

Any attempt to just replace the head unit and run a line level output through the Bose amp is doomed to failure because the Bose amp a) doesn't sound good unless the head unit uses the correct equalisation (configured in VAG-COM on the Concert) and b) doesn't accept a normal line level input - it uses something in between speaker and line levels.

Besides, replacing the ICE system will cost as much as a remap and I know which I would prefer....

Have to disagree there Al.

I replaced my Concert head unit (Bose) with a quality Becker unit http://www.mybecker.com/beckerCms/www_r ... navSeq=224

(mine has Red text which matches the Audi red perfectly)

I used a converter to take the Line out from the Becker into the bose.

It sounds WAY better than the concert unit, has iPod navigation with Artist / Song Display and has bluetooth phone handsfree as well.

Was great, until I got bored and went for the RNS-E Sat Nav! :)

(just read your post rolskii, basically agreeing with what your saying, if you have an iPod get the ipod adaptor too, works well)

Ditto. I had an Alpine head unit connected to my BOSE (previous car). Fantastic quality compared to the Audi units and with decent MP3 handling, IMHO.

I like the RNS-E but want full (not partial) postcode matching if I'm going to replace the RNS-D.

@reserves - What year is your car?

From what I understand, the 2001 onward has a different setup and they don't suffer from the abnormal input voltage & equalisation/phasing problems of the earlier ones. Apparently, they also keep the amp on during a phone call, whereas the earlier one switches it off!!!!

I have no first hand experience (other than with the Parrot install), but there are several posts on the Audi forums where the problems with the early B5 audio are described in detail. It could be that the UK spec was different to the US and that I could easily replace the Concert with a decent head unit. (Un)fortunately I have just booked a remap, so funds will not allow me to test the results of just swapping out the Concert...

Was 2001 A4 with Symphony = TELEFON
Now 2003 S4 with Sat Nav+ = PHONE

Both with aftermarket phone kits, a Nokia wired kit in the A4 and a Parrot blue tooth kit in the S4
