Drop that padding missus

Post by yorkie » Thu Jun 14, 2007 8:37 pm

Anyone removed their under bonnet padding?

Besides a weight reduction of about 100 grammes will it more importantly help to reduce under bonnet heat?

Did this on other cars and did notice in hot weather temp gauge was reading slightly lower.

I've also done it on previous cars. Be interested to here what difference it makes to interior noise

Snap - guess it would be louder ... inside the car and out.

Might help with the weight distribution. Marginal though

It acts as an isulator so my guess is it will hold heat which is not good.

Never made any difference to noise on any car I did it on before.

I'm sure it's for sound-proofing too ...

Could be sound-deadening for environmental reasons (noise pollution)

Quite a few years back (!) a friend removed the padding from his XR2 with the opinion that it would help the engine stay cooler due to the insulating padding being taken out. His bonnet paintwork however faded quite rapidly due to the heat from the engine bay with the padding removed.

I had the same problem with my XR2, paint faded every 3-6months. Only difference was I never removed the insulated padding :jump:

I can't imagine that a car manufacturer would put excessive "padding" under the bonnet i there was a potential for overheating. Overheating could cause fires, breakdowns and possible premture wear on the engine(??). Personally I can't see any advantage in removing it.
