GEARBOX on RS6

My RS6 seems like a slipping on the auto box. On the odd occasion when I put my foot down to about 3/4 pedal from approx 1/4 pedal, the revs rise as they should. Then as I get to about 4800rpm I get a sudden bang from under the car. Then it carries on as it should. If it was a manual car, its as if the clutch was slipping then it suddenly engages. Is this a common problem.Any ideas?

My idea would be to stop driving it before you seriously bugger something up and call your dealer to have the car recovered and claim on the warrantee.

Thanks. It has happened maybe 4 or 5 times in the last 3 months. It was suggested it might be the torque converter?

It may be less likely to happen in a different gearbox mode like M or Sport, as they both lock-up the clutch sooner (and at lower revs) than D.

Take it to a dealer mate, they might change the oil for you esp if it was low already as a first measure and if it doesnt get any better, then they'll end up changing the whole gearbox. Hopefully you'll have extended warranty I think the torque converter can be changed seperatley but more often than not, they change the whole box. The box is not servicable.

Interesting - if I floor it in my car, full throttle travel - I will sometimes get a similar thing. Always put this down to the sheer forces involved as it lurches forward - torque converter or drive shaft...

Sudden bangs at 4800rpm cant be good for all things mechanical. Problem will be in demonstrating the fault if its that infrequent. Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Gearchange should ALWAYS be smooth. And there should certainly be no slipping of the clutch.
Try it from the lights in tiptronic when warm. Take it up to the red line in 1st, hold it there, then change to 2nd. It should change instantly, no noises. If not, then you definately need a new box.
Also after a long hard run, put your window down and drive the car slowly, ensure there is no transmission whine, another symptom of box failure.

This is 100% the gearbox, have replaced 3 now with exactly the same symptoms. The gearbox oil will be black where the clutches have been slipping in the torque converter. If your dealer is stingy they'll just replace the converter but hopefully you'll get a shiny new gearbox.

The exact same things happened to my RS6 leading up to total Tiptronic failure.

Clutch would slip to around 4K RPM (only when pulling away from standstill of very low speeds), then as the revs reached about the 4K mark the box would fully engage & i'd get a kick in the pants.

After a few weeks of this (intermitent) i was heading to my local Audi dealer when the car went into Limp mode (great timing) & locked in 3rd gear. The dealer could not trace the exact problem or rectify, so the entire Tip box was replaced. IIRC the overall bill (under warranty) was around £13K. It's engine out & about 80hrs labour.

A very good question & it was 50/50 relationship & the fact other boxes had failed (on standard cars) so they did not push back due to my mods.

Saying that & the funniest part, the Audi Technicians had to call Sportec for details on how best to re-connect the Sportec Carbon Fibre ducting that graced my RS6 & of course my shiny oversize Sportec Intercoolers as these were not in their workshop manual

The horrible part & a sight i'll never forget, was looking through the workshop viewing window & seeing my RS6 with no front end & my Engine hanging from a hoist just infront of my car. It took them 2 weeks to complete the work & the bulk of the cost was labour which IIRC was around 80hrs at Audi rates

I can confirm that a gearbox install on the RS6 is 24 hours labour, with 3k for the box, 2k for the labour so total bill should be more around the 5k mark.

Maybe they prices were much higher when you had yours done Paul?
Also I think you may have been quite lucky with your mods, these days, dealers take MAF and Boost logs and send them to Audi UK, and spit out any warranty claims if Audi UK confirm the readings are outside manufacturing specs.

As we're on the subject of gearboxes, I have a quick question.

When in "Neutral" and putting into "Drive" i notice two knocks of engagement into drive.

One i can understand but two?

Anyone have an answer to this?

I know Preston Audi's hourly rate was close to £100 when my box was replaced (they've quite flashy premises ) & they confirmed it was around 80hrs labour, so the maths appeared genuine as i'd mandated it was only their Master Technician who could work on my car, however being a warranty claim, perhaps the dealer enhanced the number of hours for extra pennies Was told the total Tiptronic system was around £5K in parts alone so all seemed correct at the time. I can also assume it took them a few extra hours due to the extras on the car

I'd still no doubt get away with this now, however i am glad i don't now own such a highly modified car.
