fan noise after taking keys out

Post by RSVI » Fri Dec 22, 2006 8:24 am

Not had the car that long (RS6) but last night i noticed a noise when I'd taken the keys out.

Sounded like an interference sound you'd get from an unturned TV.

First i thought it was coming from the TV/radio but then worked out it was coming from the centre air grills on the dash, sounded like a tiny fan working.

Anyone enlighten me on this one?

if its anything like the 1.8t engine it could be you are hearing the electric water pump running, this pumps coolant around the engine and turbo for 10 minutes after you stop the car.

IIRC the RS6 also has an auxiliary water pump (to remove the heat from the turbo centre bearings).

That makes sense

Does that mean it's not so important to leave engine running for a while after a hard ish drive?

If so i guess a turbo timer is a waste of money

Always let the engine idle after a good run!

Letting the car tick over before switching off lets the turbo spool down to its lowest rpm so bearing wear from oil starvation (no oil being pumped around when engine is off) is at a minimum, plus heat is taken away from the turbo.

Therefore, as per Derdle, ALWAYS let it idle after use ;)
