Speech control & RNS-E

Have a new RS4 with the latest RNS-E and by pushing a button on the steering wheel it allows me to voice command the telephone system. The manual states that voice commands can also be used for Nav , Cd etc however this doesn't seem to work.

Am I missing something here, if the Dial functions work, why won't the others? . If I say "help" ( like my BMW used to ) it only gives me the Telephone speech commands and nothing else.

Any ideas ?

My first thought is that you do not have an SDS nav system fitted, go to the sound menu and look for Speech Dialogue Volume, if it is not there then you aint got it. The only way around it is a new Nav unit that supports SDS and a quick rewire of the mic to the nav unit and then the phone module.

The Telephone module has it's own SDS system built in.

Looks like that is it Craig, how come others have it and it is in the manual...I can't see it anywhere in the UK Audi pricelist ??

PS is it possible to activate it on the current RNS-E or do I need a completely new one ?

To get full speech control of the RNS-E you need a special version of the RNS-E.

There's been some discussion about this on www.navplus.us and, apart from a few special cases, it seems most likely that you need an "H" version of the RNS-E (i.e. for the RS4 an 8E0 035 192 H).

When I retrofitted the RNS-E to my RS4 I got the H version and the speech commands for RNS-E functions DO work on that. I've got the RS4 flat bottomed wheel so I can only use the speech commands in a special test mode (but I'm working on a fix to that - but it's been too cold and wet to make much progress in the last few weeks).

Like several useful options (auto dimming door mirrors, seat memory for the Recaros, etc.) Audi UK do not offer this in the RS4.

Yes it is an interesting one this, it is almost as if Audi UK think the Rs4 is a track car so doesn't need the nice useful options, I mean I can understand voice control of the phone whilst on the track..." phone pits...need more fuel etc" but as the Stig on Topgear proves, you also need to be able to control your music etc !
