Took the '6 to Euro Disney for the day

Post by installer69 » Sat Sep 09, 2006 6:43 pm

Actually, I took the Kids: the car just transported us.

I love Eurotunnel. £22 each way AND they throw in a free adult Disney ticket!

I think the French hate us. At the tolls, the right hand side ticket dispenser for Rosbeefs never works and with a queue of cars behind I had to get out and walk round (kids' arms are too short) and when I paid at t'other end the women must have had short arms 'cos I was leaning across and out the passenger window with car in drive and tippy-toe on the brake pedal and managed to drop a few euros.

I was going to drop the car in to the dealer on my return 'cos I was getting massive vibes through the steering and pedals at 80mph but it went when back in Blighty so maybe it's the French motorway - anyone else had this?

The only good thing is that the French appreciate an RS6 and will openly look and even ask you about it when getting fuel. Over here people just seem to ignore you!

Mind you, I got all the way there on just under a tank full (188 miles from the terminal and I'm about 30 away from the Folkestone end)

There's not a great deal of gap between the wheels and the sides in a eurotunnel train!

My, ahem, original sat nav France disc performed superbly - remember that the eurotunnel terminal is listed as a ferry port!! and not a station.

So much for keeping the mileage down... 40K service and more front tyres, here we come.

I used to do Harwich -> Hook of Holland when going to see friends in Rotterdam. Gets you nicely North. Used to be long crossings though; about 8 hours I think but they do a fast ferry now (or did)

Eurotunnel is so convenient. I am in Kent anyway and can drive off in France in just over 1 hour from leaving my house. Takes more than that to get to London!!

Installer where did you get your tickets so cheap I've never paid less £115 each way?

ashleyadam, I only went for the day and if you are flexible with your crossing times (ie don't go when they are busy!) you get great deals. I book direct on the eurotunnel website.

How long ago did you last travel? They have reduced their prices big time recently to compete with the ferries.

Have a look on their site, I have just checked the prices on a more usable fortnight away and there are tickets as low as £49 each way. It is as well to find a cheap pair of crossings then book the rest of your trip around them. Indeed, some of the busiest crossings are £199 if you need a flexible ticket.

In the past this has been essential in case you miss the train but I got caught in the roadworks at the calais end (still going on so allow an extra 1/2 hour coming back) and they just put me on the next train FOC.

I have just checked an example price. Going out between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday 20th Sep and return Wed 27th Sep between 6am and 8am would be £59 out plus £49 back. And a free Disney ticket for use within 30 days of your outgoing trip! (worth nearly £30 in itself) Offer ends 30th Sep. Sound like a eurotunnel salesman!

Seriously though, more people should use it so they don't go bankrupt and close. You drive on, by the time you walk the kids to the toilet and back you are in France!! No walking 'round a ship spending loads on crap food that they will only throw up again later.

Dummi, I got the Eurotunnel then drove to Leipzig in East Germany not far from Berlin a couple of weeks back.

Door to door from Greenwich took me 9 hours and than included the Eurotunnel and +1 hour for CET time zone!

Gotta love autobahns ;)

Installer I managed to get ticket prices for £22 as you confirmed I was wrong, I most probably would never have seen as we travel back to Spain 3-4 times per annum generally around 2 weeks at a time so would not get the cheaper option anyway. Thanks for the advice

Go through Eurotunnel by choice, but price seems to vary depending on how long you're away. Short trips £44, but paid £169 for a week away to germany last Summer.
Agree there's not much room between the 'rails' - I actually scraped an alloy once when sent upsatirs. More room on the bottom floor, but I'm not sure my S8 will fit, as its' even wider then the RS6.
