What do I Get Next?

Post by jonp » Fri May 02, 2003 5:03 pm

When you own an RS4, pile 115K miles on in 2 years and need to change it, what do I buy Next?

Its such a hard car to beat. I have about £50k to spend, but everything else looks dull by comparison.

Porsche are just outrageously expensive - to buy and run - and you can't fit much in

DB7 only has 2 seats

BMW M3, well, the company already has one, with paddles, but not a patch on an RS4. Gear change is horrible under power

RS6 - that's been spoilt by adding an Auto Box - can't balance the car properly in corners, not nice to drive fast at all

Merc - I'm not old enough for a Merc!

C'mon Guys help me here

I've got exactly the same problem as you mate.. except that I'm going to half my budget and go for something around £35,000.. that takes me into TT V6 or 3.0l Z4.

But I'm not sure.. Should I try an FQ EVO?, or go completly bonkers on a caterham? Could go mad hatch like V6 Clio, or alfa GTA..

I really don't have a clue!

Yeah, I know, but If I go for an Evo, or Subaru, they will fall apart doing 60K miles a year, and they are damned uncomfortable to drive.

Another RS4.....?

I have been thinking the same, and the only currently available option seems to be a FQ300. I think I'll be disappointed though.

So that's why I keep going back to the RS4.

I am not sure there is anything.

You could always buy a low mileage RS4 and start again

Get the new S4 so you can tell us how it is and when the new RS4 comes out trade it in for that

Might be a bit early but Porsche Cayenne (S or better, Turbo 450hp) might start coming in the second-hand market after the summer.

isnt that Porsche a really ugly thing? Yuk

The problem with another RS4 is that when I com eround to replace mine in a years time is that they will be 3 years + old, and at that age, even low mileage ones tend to break....so lets keep the ideas coming

Right,

I've spent 5 mins thinking about it...
How does this sound?

Take a secondhand TT roadster for the summer,
swap it in for a V6 TT when ready, in the meantime
put name down for next generation RS4?

Sound good?
All I've got to do now is get it past the wife

Dave,
I assume it's your company, so why don't you buy the car yourself and fund it through business mileage expenses. The mileage you do should easily cover the costs with zero tax implications. You can claim 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, then 25p per mile thereafter from your company as business travel expenses tax free. You can claim more, but you will have to pay tax on the difference.
Works for

*I'm no expert on this one, but*
Paul - does that not mean that the buyer would have to pay VAT on the car? (rather than it going through the company's books)

I thought about that for the RS..

trouble is that I don't have a spare £60,000 sitting in the bank.. and if I Was to pay myself that amount from the business I would be hit at 40% anyway..
I though about paying myself a dividend of £60,000 but I would have to give other shareholders an equal amount dependant on their holdings so it's out of the question really...

I asked the accountant if the business could sell me the RS6 for £2.50 because I though a business could sell an item at any price but apparatnly that is fraud!

any other way?

£50k =

C32 AMG
M3 Coupe
S4 / S4 Avant

I would keep away from the Jap cars
To be honest there`s not much out there that comes close to a RS4 Avant

Maybe not the suggestion you want to hear, but I've done huge mileages in 911s and reckon they are as cheap to run as anything else on the market - and twice as fun. New 911 C2 or C4 for 60k a bargain in my opinion - if you don't need the space in the boot or the back.
