Front Speaker replacement

Post by Rivendell » Mon Jun 12, 2006 12:35 pm

Sounds like my left front speaker is going. Does anyone know if it's a straightforward job to replace?

Cheers
Mike

RE: Front Speaker replacement

Post by Nige_RS4 » Mon Jun 12, 2006 12:49 pm

Yes it is, I did it myself last weekend.

There are 2 screws on either end of the top of the door panel, then remove the screw under the door pull, prise the small plastic section out (downwards) to reveal 2 more screws. Remove these and the entire door panel will pull upwards. There are 3 electrical cables to unplug and the central locking vacuum pipe. The speaker is held on with 3 screws.

note - all screws are philips/posidrive type.

Many thanks Nige_RS4. I'll give that a try! I've either got a loose screw or the speaker is going. The problem only shows itself when its hot and goes away completely during the winter :?

Assuming it is the speaker, did you replace your speaker like with like or are there better alternatives?

I replaced it like for like, but having now seen the speaker, the quality is actually quite poor (I assume you've got BOSE too).

Maybe there is a recommended upgrade out there that doesn't involve any cutting, drilling or bodging!

Hello all,

I just did this in mine...

I have gone for a mild install... not OTT.

Got the bits from CarAudio Direct online.

I got a set of Rainbow SLX 230 Deluxe speakers w/ external crossover. I got the door adapters - again from CarAudio Direct...

Took a bit of fiddling to fit - but what a difference. Since I have added an amp and WOW - they sound great!

ONLY CONSIDER DOING THIS IF YOU HAVE A NON-BOSE SETUP. Otherwise you will HAVETO replace the amps etc.

What's different about the BOSE setup that makes it difficult to fit aftermarket speakers?

I didn't have the bose setup in my car, but my mate did. wasn't any harder to fit the new system. but we both did fit new front and rear speakers and sub new head unit one 5 chennel amp. Didn't use any of the original wiring ( speaker or power) was better to start again........

This is the sub box that I use in my car...

Thanks Brett - did you replace all 4 main speakers with the same type (or are the rear speakers a different size on the saloon?)

Anyone replaced the rear speakers on an avant?

Bose systems have some funky settings to the headunit (Which can be disabled with VAG-Com) but if the speakers are running off the Bose Amp (The rears do, not sure about the fronts...) the speakers & amp are @ 8 Ohm... if you stick 4 Ohm speakers in tehre with BOSE headunit settings its going to cause something to break somewhere.

just out of interest has anyone tried adapting the wiring for the bose amp for an aftermarket jobby?Im assuming that 2 of the wires going to the bose amp are RCAs from the headunit? I was thinking of a way to keep the standard headunit but possibly upgrade the amp and speakers in the car using all the existing wiring (apart from power and earth cables for the new amp if you see what i mean).
my cars for sale :(
