Forget the 19's for track work.... Very twitchy, i didn't like them at all. That was my impression doing a back to back comparison using yoko avs sport on both sets of rims.

265's on an 18" rim??? Not me....

sorry mis-read, they are going on 19's.

JR had the mtm 19's, think his views are the same albeit he was running conti's iirc. You will just have to suck it and see with cups on them, they may perform well, although arent the bi-moto's only 8.5"?? 265 may be to wide for them and again you may have issues with tyre roll with them being much wider than they should be...Please let us know.

Forgot to mention the Yokos come in a range of differnt compounds, the ones i used on the rs4 were AO48(E) folllowing advise from Yoko themselves. The Lotus runs on the softer (R) compound but I wouldn't want to use these on the audi with the extra weight and power it is carrying.

I had problems with outer edges when running 28-30 hot, maybe the front tyres couldn't cope with steering and power. (clio)

Do you know if the yokos on a standard rs4 setup run even heat temperatures across the width of them?

I've only done one day on the Michelin cups (265/18s) and they seemed great, Prawns done many days on these with good reports. After using 235s is the tyre roll excessive then with 265s? I would like to try 235 can i borrow yours

light weight (forged) Bi Motos are 19x9.5 and lighter than the standard rs4 wheel will let you know the results if they ever turn up. :bash:

cheers

Pass, I dont have a pyrometer. I did 8 or so laps of the ring in the rs4 putting well over 100 miles of high speed driving in them in one day with no obvious problems to the edges. The initial wear seemed very even with the pressures set @ 28. I am running the quattro gmbh suspension which would seem to give a little more neg camber on the front with it lowering the car.

265 on a 9.5" rim may be fine, they seemed a little small in width on the 10" sportecs but they do have very large lips to them. Best thing is to phone up either dunlop, michelin, yoko etc. They will tell you the best tire width for the size of rim you are using. I dont like guessing games....I'm sure the info will be online somewhere aswell.

would like to try the Dunlop D01Js but first i have some lightweight 19" MTM Bi-motos with 265/30 cups on the way
MTM Bi MOTO is not light its heavy as hell, the standard wheel is lighter, and on the track a 18" wheels is far better less twitchy and you can make the car doo great things

Without tyres....

Cast 19" MTM bi motos are around 17kgs each iirc

Standard wheels are 15kgs each iirc

New forged 19" MTM bi motos are 12kgs.

JR, Do you think it is the increase in unsprung weight that spoils the handling or the size? have you tried a lightweight 19?

I've heard that the 18s are much better for handling on the BMW M3s than the optional 19s, but the CSL runs a different 19. I'm guessing the CSls wheels are going to be very light.

It would be interesting to know if the 370/380 6 Pot Movit kit increases or decreases the unsprung weight....any guesses?

Yep, the CSL wheels (made by BBS) are very light...took mine off the other week for the first time and couldn't believe the difference after lugging around RS4 wheels so often !

Interesting that the new GT3 is on 19" wheels too...

I think the Movit 6 pot kit is still lighter than the standard stuff...standard stuff weighs a ton!

Havent tried them but i think i was the first to get a set of the cast ones, and yes unsprung weight effects the way the car turns in and understeers, also the extra weight is murder on the brakes.

the normal road tyres would when you pump them up to help stiffen the walls -

I use to run the yoko avs at 34ish on the road and put them upto 38-40 hot for the track, to squishy otherwise.

Are there any downsides to running track rubber on your road car? Increased stress or is it nominal?

On the track IMO yes, as you say more stress.... on brakes, wheel bearings, suspension components etc etc, in general most normal road cars on track are being pushed beyond what they are designed to do without semi slicks.

To what degree i don't know, but obviously the more grip on the tyre and the harder the car is pushed the more stress...... i have heard many different things, two of them being:

.....Slick tyres will give up to 40% more grip

.....Every track mile is the equivalent to 10 road miles.

If using the car regularly on track I would plan for increased maintenance costs whatever (wheel bearings, track rod ends, suspension bushes etc) and regular fluid changes (gearbox oil, brake fluid, oil etc)

From my experience the increase in grip when moving from a road tyre to a semi slick is significant and highly recommended!

I’m sure there are others that have been tracking cars longer than me that will comment on experiences

cheers

I'd recommend track tyre to anyone who is semi serious about track days. Wheel bearings do seem to suffer a bit, but the gain far outweighs the cost.
