Plans to roll out SPECS throughout the UK

Post by victor2vt » Wed Apr 16, 2008 5:31 pm

Yes
They want to put these cameras on every stretch of road, and, if you go 1 mph over the average speed you'll get 3 points and a £60 fine. See today's Express. One way of cutting congestion down but my Origin b2 will be by my side

I know it will never happen but wouldn't it be good if we could get EVERY VEHICLE on our roads to stick strictly to the designated speed limit and watch the gridlock unfold, and keep these a*******s off our back !!

I'm afraid I can't agree with you.....
Teaching people how to drive properly would be money better spent.
There should also be a separate motorway entitlement, so those of us who can drive in a straight line without crashing can do so in peace.

Hang on R8BND, to punish people for going 1mph over the limit over a set length of road is going right OTT.
What about overtaking ?
I agree with you over the motorway entitlement, who would object to 20 mph in the vicinity of schools and hospitals, 40 mph to replace present 30 mph limits and max 100 mph on motorways with severe penalties for breaching any of them ?
Then you could test your carbon blades

That was my point.... I'm in favour of unlimited speed for those of us paying attention...

I think we may have wires crossed here somewhere! I read your post as that is was good to have SPECS everywhere, doing us for +1mph.... but obviously not. No real point in owning an RS4 if that was true.
Most motorway issues other than actual crashes/incidents are either people tailgating and randomly braking, or those idiots with cones blocking off 2 lanes so someone can change a tyre! I'm all for safety, and someday it'll be me changing a tyre, but I think I'll cope without the cones!

I like to think that my driving is 'above' average (40 points in 20 years, but only 1 accident), and I adhere to the 'system' that the rozzers use - Roadcraft should really be made part of the highway code. That would probably save many lives by getting some of the more remedial drivers off the road.

For your point on overtaking, using the system to overtake a car doing 45 in a 60mph, you'll probably hit around 100mph in an RS4.... as I did in mine. Trick is to remember to slow down afterwards..... I often forget to do that though

As for the 20mph near schools etc, probably a good idea. Although driving using the system automatically makes you slow down because of hazards and road conditions.

I shall be reading my new copy of Roadcraft on the way to Australia...maybe twice!

In a nutshell, i'm saying we're easy targets for raising revenue and as we keep on accepting more and more "laws", without complaint, they'll keep on finding new ways to destroy the "Joy of Motoring".

Enjoy Australia, if you're driving, watch out for speed cameras placed in dummy wheelie bins (honest) !
I bet you're pleased you're not having to use Terminal 5 !!

Thank god for my Snooper and Defuser!! This is all going silly now. People need to learn to drive properly and the Police should be looking for these people not someone doing 1 mph over the limit. Rip of Britain just gets better!

I expect these cameras will help get rid of all the drunk/drugged up drivers, talkers/texters, uninsured, those without a license and we can all enjoy reduced motoring costs as our insurance companies keep on alleging that these are responsible for the rising costs of motoring...
AS F'ING IF!
Unfortunately Joe Bloggs has swallowed the whole "its speed NOTHING ELSE that is the cause of every accident", you can see it every day where they will sit behind each other bumper to bumper at a consistent 40mph, too scared to overtake even on bloody dual carriageways, and while this majority also still have a vote and no heart, those of us who do not like the way things are going will stand no chance.

Have you noticed on roads with a 60 mph limit they place the cameras on a straight stretch of road, the only time you get a chance to overtake a truck/caravan/group of 3 or 4 slow moving vehicles, after having followed them for miles round bends with no overtaking opportunity !!!
This is why people take risks, no way should they be called "Safety Cameras".

bobbler...
too scared to overtake
More to the point is that too many cars are so underpowered these days that they cannot overtake! And judging by the pillocks behind the wheel perhaps it is no bad thing.

Sadly far too many people have been indoctrinated with the "Speed Kills" message. As all intelligent people know it isn't speed as such that kills but a combination of too much speed in inappropriate circumstances and generally crap driving standards. If "Speed Kills" then every aeroplane passenger and astronaut would be dead.

The minimum driving age needs to be increased (it is effectively being increased to 18 shortly anyway with new rules coming in) and the idea of the Roadcraft system of car control needs to be taught.

Anyway, this topic could quite easily link up wit the "Anyone thought of Emigrating" thread.

I can imagine this on 60% of roads to just give enough incentive to own a petrol powered car so we all keep filling up, and make a good haul on speeding fines. I mean 80% tax on fuel is a gold mine the gov has to make the most before it runs out

Never really thought of that to be honest. As I drive an S4 or ride a motorbike and have never had a small car as such other than as a hire/temp vehicle, it never crossed my mind that this was the case at all.
I forget that I am used to having some sort of power under my foot.
Still doesn't excuse the dawdlers at the front of the queues holding them up in the first place though ;)

Sometimes thos dawdlers are buses, cars with p*xy caravans, milk floats or HGv's and they can't build up any speed.

What really annoys me is the ole boy (you got it - flat cap and pipe etc) doing 45 on a 60mph stretch of road and then hits a 30 limit ..... and keeps doing 45! Now these bast**ds need to be banned (for life).

God if it was 80% tax we'd all be laughing that would make petrol about 42p a litre.

Why is petrol tax expressed as a percentage of the gross price when VAT is express as a percentage of the purchase price ( manufacturing cost +profit) so £1 in the shops costs you £1.175 = 17.5% tax.

Apply the same logic to fuel and the tax is 300% of the manufacturing cost plus profit. ie 25p of fuel costs you £1!!!

Why dont they use these more realistic figures...............because there'd be a bl**dy riot!!!!
