Definite flatspot

Car (B7 RS4 Cab) accelerates cleanly through the rev range, 1k to 8k no problem. However, when upshifting, there is a definite pause before the power comes in again.
Accelerate to 7k in second, change up to third, engine sits at 4k... and then pulls cleanly again. Same in the next gear.
I don't have the opportunity to accelerate often but I'd say it happens every time.
Car is totally standard, 65k miles, no indication of ever having a carbon clean or the like. I run it on super, always, and V-Power when I can get it. Is this what a gunked up engine feels like? Or do I have a fuel/mapping issue?
The only thing I can compare it to is like having the traction control coming on in a RWD drive car! But with a Quattro system on a dry road and good-if-old Michelin Alpins on it, shouldn't be the issue.
