VW Gti Edition 30 advice

Post by Stevie1982 » Sun Jul 16, 2017 8:27 am

So due to a change in work situation I had to let the b7 rs4 and have replaced it with a mk5 golf gti edition 30. Only had a it a few days and am quite impressed with it so far, now I'm registered on one of the sites however I've always found this site to be helpful so thought I'd ask for some opinions regarding a stage 1 map. I was looking at the obvious of MRC and appreciate they're big on audi but wasn't to sure as for vw, then there's VAGtech who use the Revo software and finally R-tech who I've personally never heard of them but a Google search brings them up with results on vw forums. All 3 offer a similar price with similar end results however who would you use

Best Regards Steve

The Ed 30 engine is virtually the same as the Audi 8P S3 engine, so if you are happy with using MRC then go with them, expect 310ps with a stage 1 remap. If you're manual watch your clutch though as they are prone to slipping.

No, the dsg box is good for up to stage 2 on that engine. Had my S3 mapped by MRC, so you will be in good hands. Just make sure you've checked / replaced the usual suspects before mapping; plugs, dv, pcv, fuel filter.

Usual suspects? Car is going in for a major service and cambelt with vw this week coming not sure if they replace the fuel filter so I'll ask.

Regarding the dv, pcv.... Why does the dv need to be replaced? Only reason I ask is mrc haven't mentioned it

And PCV? What is this

Cheers

DV is renown for splitting, even on std boost - newer / stronger part available. PCV is the breather valve on the front of the engine and also splits / leaks - has been superseded by a newer part. Dealers won't replace the fuel filter - they claim it is good for the life of the engine! Also, plugs should be changed every 10-15k miles (VW will tell you 40k miles)

Well it's in for its 80k service so I should hope the plugs will be changed yet to be on the safe side I'll ask the question along with request the fuel filter to be changed.

DV assume that would be something like a forge item, do they do a Recirculating valve over a vta as I'm not looking for the additional noise.

No, stick with OEM for the DV. You can check it yourself, see what version you have. If you have anything that doesn't end in a G then probably best just to replace it for peace of mind.

80k also means DSG fluid and filter and Haldex fluid and filter?

That could be an expensive service if you're getting it done at a main dealer - are there no specialists near you? Could save you minimum £300!

Probably easier to just take the care to MRC to do everything.
previous- Pug 205 gti, 306 gti, 309 gti Goodwood.
Audi S3, S4 V8 avant.
Porsche Macan Turbo.
Gone but NEVER forgotten - C5 RS6 Misano red avant.

Now - Empty garage

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there!

I've got a mk5 GTi at home.

1. Take it to a specialist, not a main dealer.

2. Make sure the cam follower is changed if it hasn't been already

3. 80k = DSG service too

4. R-tech are meant to be the Daddy's when it comes to tuning these. I'd choose them over MRC. Too far from me, so I'm thinking about APR for a stage 2 map

5. You'll be wanting a brake upgrade as soon as you've mapped it - warning you now!

Thanks Nige I'll take a look at the valve tomorrow and reorder where and if need be. I'd hope that they will do what should be done however I'll be asking about the points you've raised. You'll be surprised I've had a couple of prices back from indys Re the cambelt and vw are actually cheaper as they have an "offer" on at the moment. So as it stands it's more cost effective to let vw who are 8miles away carry it out. The car is also a one owner car with full main dealer history so it keeps that up.

@chunky you'd of thought so yet while in talks about mapping I've asked and didn't get a response to it and as above vw have been quite competitive in price and keeps the car as full main dealer.

Faisal, thanks for the honest reply. I haven't spoke with r-tech as my go to was mrc so I'll take a look

No probs

Some more info on the cam follower below. Ignore at your peril! Not sure if VW would check it for you or not
