Driveway + Friend = Awkward situation

Post by jaysrs4 » Mon May 09, 2016 8:29 pm

Ok so I need some advice please. A good friend of mine came round yesterday and was faffing about on my drive as he's got an issue with his steering rack, all whilst I was inside sorting kids and things with the wife, before I went out with him.

Last year I spent over 100k on having our house extended and part of that was a new driveway to a new double garage, with freshly laid tarmac, which has now been down 12 months.

I come out this morning to two of these -

He's obviously been sawing away at the steering (full lock, to full lock) on the spot and ripped up my tarmac.

Two questions really - one, should the tarmac do that and secondly how would you deal with the situation? (Also advice on dealing with the wife as she's not clocked it yet - deep :dung: )

I'm just thinking, it was 25+ degrees yesterday, so the Tarmac was probably quite soft :(

I'm no Tarmac specialist but I'd be moaning at the contractor. Doen't happen in supermarkets, so why should it happen to your driveway.

I have been reading up online and nearly every Tarmac website says 'avoid turning your steering lock to lock on a drive, especially in hot weather'.

Maybe the grade of bitumen they use on public car parks is far higher than private drives?

It'll look horrific patched up - i'm not a happy chappie. You're right though, I'm not about to fall out with him about it, he's already admitted to doing it but said it shouldn't break up like that, but I have no idea how much and how long he was sawing away, lock to lock.

A ray of sunshine as ever!!! :assflash:

I think I'll get the builder round and have a word, he's a decent lad but doubt he'll do much. My mate has offered to pay but I can't expect him to lay out for re-laying the whole drive...can I?!

Lol at first I thought you'd dropped petrol on it as I did that on our old drive and made a right mess of it

I recon a lot of research but that can be patched. Not a crappy council hobby like on the streets but there must be a company that specialises in that.

You've now put me right off Tarmac... Block paving when I finally get my drive done!
