What to buy for £30k ?

Post by Jess » Fri Jul 17, 2015 12:05 am

Hi all. I am looking for a good second hand car buy for £32k at most.

Must not be high mileage. So sub 60k
Must hold value well as will sell in 12 months
2 or 4 door
Quite special and stand out from the norm
Must take v tall driver..6'5"
At most 10 years old car.
Interesting car

Please help me with ideas to choose something.
Thanks
J.

Was looking at a gen 2 997 Carrera with 50,000 miles for £30k on Autotrader / Pistonheads yesterday. Well priced for a gen 2 - they command a hefty premium over the prefacelift 2004-2008 cars, especially good residuals

Mapped C6 RS6 for me all day long I think, or possibly an M5 Touring.

Space in the BMW is vast - a (6ft 6in) friend has one and fits fine :) Sounds nice too.

Great at going very fast on a track. Rubbish at everything else though.

Thanks guys for the suggestions so far.

So far the 997 is most appealing,... but not sure if 32k would buy the "S" variant with the 3.8 and reasonable mileage ??

RS6 sounds interesting for obvious reasons, but does it sell easily and hold money well ??

R34 is nice but too old now and the current GTR would be more preferable TBH as it is supposed to be so good, but that is still out of price range.

Maser has potential, but prob costs Ferrari money to maintain and might be fragile ?

M3 would be a dog for that kinda money anyway

I also considered the AMv8 or DB9 and also the Bentley Continental GT. Any thing else out there worthy of the brief?

Thanks J

Have you driven one Ross? Nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, on a damp road with original Cup tyres it would be a handful, but most users rectify that by having another set of wheels with PS2/SS tyres for road use. That said, it would seem the Cup2 tyres are more forgiving than the originals. You may have seen Jethro's EVO video of the 458 Aperta in the pouring road around some Italian mountain roads.

I can guarantee the E46's, even in standard M3 trim have bags of traction, even in the wet. There is a good reason they are recognised as one of the greatest drivers cars by many motoring journalists.

Yes I have. My friend had one two years ago. And I completely agree - it's an awesome drivers car.

It's not, however, suited to going to the shops. Or taking your wife to dinner. Or nipping your mum down the post office...

All of which a C63 / RS6 / M5 are great at. That was my point.

It's a bit like saying "why not get a R500 Caterham". Absolutely awesome drivers cars, but rubbish at everything else ;)

OK, see where you are coming from with the popping to the shops bit (although, it's a car that makes a milk run a 45 minute job I would say). So, I agree it doesn't do the comfort thing as well as other suggestions. It certainly hits the depreciation and interesting requirements though. Lol at the R500 comment though, different kettle of fish as much more hardcore, but see the direction. But R500, wow! Had my face pulled off in one of those!! :rocker:

No chance. Certainly not a gen 2 which is the one to go for. Very few gen 2s crop up under 34-35k - they will be 3.6 manuals with higher milers or less popular spec / colours
