Update - I've been advised that the problem is a misfire in cylinder no.3
Now this doesn't sound as fatal as a compression problem but I'm no mechanic so a lot of it is gobbledygook to me :)
Anybody had anything similar? Any ideas?
The car's going to Audi on Wednesday now so they can have a look...
Cheers

Could be something as simple as a coil pack.

Any chance you can get it to a good specialist rather than Audi? I wouldn't trust them to not point at something irrelevant (and expensive), potentially making the insurance write-off scenario more likely?

Best of luck getting it all sorted

I'd love to be able to do that but I'd have to forfeit the courtesy car if I took that route.
And having a car over the next couple of weeks is very important to me.
The car has recently been to the said Audi garage for a 'big' service and health check so it is known to them.
We'll see what they come back with..

Got the car back...
All the plugs have been changed and currently no engine light :)
However, the car had a major service that included plugs 5 months/2k miles ago at the very same Audi dealer.....
Read into that what you will but I think I'll be contacting them in the New Year for an explanation..
Oh, and my rear tyre depth has increased in the same time according the the health checks..

Yep, that'll be the plan for any future work that I need to pay for out of my own pocket!!

Main dealers are terrible, I had my rs4 health checked and the gave me a list back. 99.9% of the faults were fine according to a audi specialist.

I understand what everyone is saying about taking it somewhere else instead of a audi dealer...but what you got to remember is this lad got his car knicked by some piece of s#@t so why should he spend money getting it sorted when the insurance will pay for it as long as its a audi approved dealer...this is a potential barrel of worms and theres no doubt in my mind that the car has been thrashed to hell so fu@k knows what else will creep up in the future?? Its a tricky one what to do if im honest...personally i would be chatting to insurance company about potential future issues if and when you get car sorted...what i mean is lets say one of pistons has a hair line crack and 2 months down the line the engine lets go or timing chain snaps..it maybe a bit far fetched but hey...if it happens you wont be laughing
......maybe talk to them about how much you would expect to get back if wrote off
...coz it aint gunna be the same car you used to drive before it got stolen...these things arent cheap anyway if things go wrong so only trying to help you mate and hopefully save you money....

Cheers jay

I hear what you're saying, but it'll probably spend 2 months at the stealers trying to be fixed. I'd be asking the insurance company if I could take it to either Unit20 or MRC.

Really ott to be honest. Once they give it a clean bill of health then off you go. They won't pay for future repairs and why should they?? People need to be realistic. A car can break/fail at anytime

Quick update...

the car's been fine for the last couple of weeks and I've done quite a few miles in it. So I'm happy that it doesn't need to go back for anything else :)
in the meantime, I've been updating my security...
CCTV at the house overlooking where the car is parked, recorded 24/7
Movement sensors at the entries to my house
Stoplock Pro used ALL the time
Clifford 650 mk2 with dual proximity, tilt sensors & Blackjax... (Big thanks to Paul @ PL-Autotek - https://www.pl-autotek.com/home.html - highly recommended, top bloke).
